2 BENEFITS OF THE WORD

You get to see the pictures he/she has posted. You can read all the updates. You get the notification for updates. You hear from him/her directly. You would feel knowledgeable about this person, is it?
If you are a diligent student of the Bible, I am sure you would have a similar feeling about God. You know what He likes, you see what He has done, you know what He wants you to do. This ‘direct’ access to God’s revelation leads to innumerable benefits. Let's see what some of the benefits of diving into the Bible are.
It gives us the Knowledge of God
(His Work, His Wealth, His Will, His Wrath, His Wisdom, His Warnings, His Way)
The following are just a very small sample of what you would find in the Word of God.
Bible reveals what God has done in the past, how He is working in the present and what He will do in the future. The Bible starts with, “In the Beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Gen 1:1). “For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through Him and for Him.” (Col 1:16) We later find that because mankind rebelled against God and was separated from God. To save these people, God becomes a man in Jesus. He says, “I have come to give life in all its fulness (John 10:10). He accomplished His work on the cross was buried and rose again. For those who believe in Jesus, it says He “who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Phil 1:6) We also read that one day He will “wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Rev 21:4).
It gives us a glimpse into His Wealth. (Ps 50:10; James 1:17). He is able to make all grace abound to us so that we abound in every good work (2 Cor 9:8).
It shows us His will, what He desires of us. “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8). The Bible reveals the general will of God and when a person follows the general will that is revealed to him/her, God shows him/her the specific will regarding his/her life.
It speaks about His Wrath, the righteous anger that the Holy God of all the universe has against the sinfulness of man. God alone is holy in the absolute and ultimate sense (Rev 15:4; 1 Sam 2:2). Holiness belongs to God by nature; any holiness found in angels or humans is derived from Him. Bible says, “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness.” (Romans 1:18)
It indicates how wise He is. In fact, while talking about this, Apostle Paul breaks out into a Hymn of Praise. “O the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments, and untraceable His ways! Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counselor?” Who has first given to God, that God should repay him? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever!” Amen. Isaiah 40 would be an excellent chapter to find a lot of attributes of God, including His Wisdom.
We come across His warnings throughout the Bible. “The judgments of the LORD are true, being altogether righteous.... By them indeed Your servant is warned; in keeping them is great reward. (Ps 19:9,11) By reading God’s Word, we can be warned how God will deal with us regarding any actions we take. It gives warnings to people of God as well as those who deny God. It gives a clear indication of the cause and effect in the universe that God has created.
Jesus says, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the wind blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because its foundation was on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its collapse!” (Mt 7: 24-27). Now this warning does not apply only to the words that Jesus has said, but that would be applicable to all that the Bible reveals. Isa 40: 8 says, “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.”
His Way. Bible also reveals the Way, our Lord Jesus Christ. In fact, Jesus is presented in all the books of the Bible, one way or another. More about that in the Chapter - Meet the Author.
It Helps us to be Intimate with the Lord
Jesus said, “Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” (John 14:21)
We read in Psalm 25:14 (ESV), “The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant.” The Amplified version says, “The secret [of the wise counsel] of the LORD is for those who fear Him, And He will let them know His covenant and reveal to them [through His word] its [deep, inner] meaning. Ps 25:14 AMP.
So, you fear God and listen to His Word, you can have an intimate relationship with the Lord.
A person who reads the Word of God and obeys it has the privilege of having a close fellowship with God. This person will know the character of God and His will for his/her life. The challenge is we live in a sinful world and we are so prone to have a deceptive heart. It is here; the Word comes to our aid. As Hebrews 4:12 says, the Word can discern the “thoughts and intentions of the heart” and expose to us our sinfulness. When we confess it and move forward, we can have a right fellowship with God.
Proverbs 2:1-5 says “My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God”
We learn to pray better
Pray is one of the greatest privileges or possibilities known to man. We get to ask and receive (Terms and Conditions Apply).
We also learn to pray better as we find examples of God’s people who prayed and found answers and favour from God. Nehemiah is a classic example. He was the cup bearer to a powerful king. When he heard that his people back in Jerusalem were in dire straits, he poured out his heart before Lord. See his prayer here:
Neh 1:5-11 And I said, “O LORD God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, (6) let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people of Israel your servants, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Even I and my father’s house have sinned. (7) We have acted very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules that you commanded your servant, Moses. (8) Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples, (9) but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there I will gather them and bring them to the place that I have chosen, to make my name dwell there.’ (10) They are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand. (11) O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.” Now I was cupbearer to the king.
Observe the pattern of his prayer. He starts with adoration (v5), move on to confession (vv 6,7) reminds God of His promises (vv 8-10) and then presents his petition to God. We later read that when Nehemiah was standing before the King, he asks the King for supplies to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and gets a very positive response. Proverbs 21:1 tells us that “The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.” We see this principle at work here. When Nehemiah prayed God worked in the King’s heart and granted the favour and help Nehemiah needed.
A model for Prayer
Dr. Bill Bright, the founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, was passionate about personal and corporate prayer. One of the models in prayer he highlighted was ACTS model.
Adoration: Focus on worshiping God for who He is—His attributes, greatness, and holiness.
Example: "Lord, You are all-powerful, all-knowing, and worthy of all praise. I honor You as the Creator and Sustainer of all life."
Confession: Acknowledge and repent...
