To cleanse the soul from every hidden stain,
Angirasa guides the penance through the pain. [1]
With ancient rules for every walk of life,
Apastamba stills the chaos and the strife. [2]
For those who seek the path of noble deed,
Atri sows the dharmic, holy seed. [3]
In codes of law and royal statecraft's light,
Aushanasi keeps the social order bright. [4]
Where justice seeks the truth in every word,
Brihaspati's legal voice is clearly heard. [5]
Within the home, where sacred hearths are fed,
By Daksha's wisdom is the householder led. [6]
The oldest root from which the branches grow,
Gautama's laws through all the ages flow. [7]
Beyond the world, where quiet spirits dwell,
Harita's verses of the dharma tell. [8]
In house and stage of life ordained,
In class and duty truth sustained;
The rites of penance thus were shown,
By sage Angiras clearly known. [1]
If twice-born eat the food impure,
Of outcast hands not clean or sure;
The lunar penance they must keep,
For Brahmin, Kshatriya half as deep. [2]
The washerman, the tanner too,
The dancer, potter in their due;
The fisher, hunter, tribes of ill,
These seven outcast named still. [3]
If water kept in a deceased home,
Is drunk by twice-born unaware alone;
At once the rite of penance made,
Restores the purity displayed. [4]
If from Chandal’s well or pot,
By ignorance the sip is got;
Then penance rules for each are set,
By class and law they must be met. [5]
The Brahmin keeps the penance whole,
The king performs with half the role;
The Vaishya half again must do,
The Shudra keeps a quarter true. [6]
If Brahmin drinks from outcast hand,
Unknowing takes the tainted stand;
A day and night in fasting stay,
With fivefold rite he cleans away. [7]
If Brahmin touched by Brahmin’s waste,
In food or drink by careless haste;
By rinsing mouth he cleanses fast,
So Angiras the teaching cast. [8]
If Kshatriya’s waste should touch his hand,
The Brahmin bathes by holy strand;
With chant and rite the sin is gone,
By half a day the cleansing done. [9]
If Vaishya’s waste or Shudra’s too,
Defiles the Brahmin pure and true;
A night of fasting cleans the stain,
With fivefold rite his soul regain. [10]
If touched by waste not his to bear,
The bath prescribed restores the fair;
But if by waste defiled again,
The Prajapatya cleans the stain. [11]
Now further hear the rules of blue,
Of cloth and stain that men may rue;
In women’s play or bed of rest,
No fault is found, no sin confessed. [12]
If Brahmin trades or guards for gain,
By such a life he falls to stain;
But threefold penance cleans his way,
And lifts him to the righteous stay. [13]
Bath, gift, and chant, and fire’s flame,
Study, offerings to sires the same;
These cleanse the sin of cloth once worn,
The blue attire by Brahmin borne. [14]
If blue or red by chance he wears,
Unknowing dons the fault that bears;
A day and night in fasting stay,
With fivefold rite he clears away. [15]
If Brahmin splits the bluewood tree,
And bloodlike sap is seen to be;
The lunar penance he must keep,
Its rule of fast both hard and deep. [16]
If food is cooked with bluewood flame,
And Brahmin eats, he bears the blame;
By vomit fast the fault is gone,
With fivefold rite his soul lives on. [17]
If Brahmin eats the blue by wrong,
Distracted mind not pure or strong;
The lunar penance cleans the way,
For all three classes the rule must stay. [18]
If food is served in cloth of blue,
The giver’s gift is lost from view;
The eater sins by taking so,
The fault remains, the merit low. [19]
If food is cooked in cloth of blue,
And Brahmin eats, defiled anew;
A day of fasting cleans the stain,
Restores his soul to light again. [20]
If widow wears the cloth of blue,
Her husband falls to hell anew;
And she herself condemned shall be,
To follow him in misery. [21]
If crops arise from land defiled,
By blueweed taint, the earth reviled;
Such food the twice-born must not take,
Or lunar fast for penance make. [22]
