इष्टापूर्ते तु कर्तव्ये ब्राह्मणेन प्रयत्नतः ।

इष्टेन लभते स्वर्गं पूर्ते मोक्षमवाप्नुयात् ॥१॥

By sacrifice man heaven gains,

By charity release sustains. [1]

एकाहमपि कर्तव्यं भूमिष्ठमुदकं शुभम् ।

कुलानि तारयेत्सप्त यत्र गौर्वितृषीभवेत् ॥२॥

One day’s gift of land or cow,

Seven clans are saved by vow. [2]

भूमिदानेन ये लोका गोदानेन च कीर्तिताः ।

ताँल्लोकान्प्राप्नुयान्मर्त्यः पादपानां प्ररोपणे ॥३॥

Worlds attained by land or cow,

Are gained by planting trees somehow. [3]

वापीकूपतडागानि देवतायतनानि च ।

पतितान्युद्धरेद्यस्तु स पूर्तफलमश्नुते ॥४॥

Wells, tanks, shrines restored again,

Bring merit’s fruit to mortal men. [4]

अग्निहोत्रं तपः सत्यं वेदानां चैव पालनम् ।

आतिथ्यं वैश्वदेवं च इष्टमित्यभिधीयते ॥५॥

Sacrifice, truth, Vedic stay,

Hospitality—Ishta they say. [5]

इष्टापूर्ते द्विजातीनां सामान्यो धर्म उच्यते ।

अधिकारी भवेच्छूद्रः पूर्ते धर्मे न वैदिके ॥६॥

Ishta-Purta dharma stands,

For twice-born men in sacred lands.

Shudra may in charity stay,

Not in Vedic rites’ array. [6]

यावदस्थि मनुष्यस्य गंगातोयेषु तिष्ठति ।

तावद्वर्षसहस्राणि स्वर्गलोके महीयते ॥७॥

As long as bones in Ganga lie,

A thousand years in heaven high. [7]

देवतानां पितॄणां च जले दद्याज्जलांजलिम् ।

असंस्कृतमृतानां च स्थले दद्याज्जलांजलिम् ॥८॥

Water gift to gods and sires,

To uninitiated dead requires. [8]

एकादशाहे प्रेतस्य यस्य चोत्सृज्यते वृषः ।

मुच्यते प्रेतलोकात्तु पितृलोकं स गच्छति ॥९॥

On eleventh day the bull is freed,

The soul to fathers’ world proceeds. [9]

एष्टव्या बहवः पुत्रा यद्यप्येको गयां व्रजेत् ।

यजेत वाश्वमेधेन नीलं वा वृषमुत्सृजेत् ॥१०॥

Many sons are wished to stay,

Yet one at Gaya clears the way. [10]

वाराणस्यां प्रविष्टस्तु कदाचिन्निष्क्रमेद्यदि ।

हसंति तस्य भूतानि अन्योऽयं करताडनैः ॥११॥

Who enters Kashi, never leaves,

Ghosts laugh, his merit he receives. [11]

गयाशिरसि यत्किंचिन्नाम्ना पिंडं तु निर्वपेत् ।

नरकस्थो दिवं याति स्वर्गस्थो मोक्षमाप्नुयात् ॥१२॥

At Gaya’s peak a ball is laid,

Hell’s bound rise, heaven’s gain is made. [12]

आत्मनो वा परस्यापि गयाक्षेत्रे यतस्ततः ।

यन्नाम्ना पातयेत्पिडं तं नयेद्ब्रह्म शाश्वतम् ॥१३॥

By name at Gaya rites are done,

To Brahman’s realm the soul is won. [13]

लोहितो यस्तु वर्णेन शंखवर्णखुरस्तथा ।

लांगूलशिरसा चैव स वै नीलवृषः स्मृतः ॥१४॥

Red in hue, with hoofs of shell,

Blue bull is named in texts that tell. [14]

नवश्राद्धं त्रिपक्षे च द्वादशस्वेव मासिकम् ।

षण्मासौ चाब्दिकं चैव श्राद्धान्येतानि षोडश ॥१५॥

Nine shraddhas in three fortnights stay,

Twelve monthly, yearly six they say.

Sixteen rites complete the way. [15]

यस्यैतानि न कुर्वीत एकोद्दिष्टानि षोडश ।

पिशाचत्वं स्थिरं तस्य दत्तैः श्राद्धशतैरपि ॥१६॥

Who omits the sixteen shraddha stay,

Becomes a ghoul despite gifts made. [16]

सपिंडीकरणादूर्ध्वं प्रतिसंवत्सरं द्विजः ।

मातापित्रोः पृथक्कुर्यादेकोद्दिष्टं मृतेऽहनि ॥१७॥

After Sapinda rite is done,

Yearly shraddha for parents begun. [17]

वर्षे वर्षे तु कर्तव्यं मातापित्रोस्तु सन्ततम् ।

सदैवं भोजयेच्छ्राद्धं पिंडमेकं तु निर्वपेत् ॥१८॥

Year by year the rite is made,

One ball offered, feast displayed. [18]

संक्रातावुपरागे च पर्वण्यपि महालये ।

निर्वाप्यास्तु त्रपः पिंडा एकतस्तु क्षयेऽहनि ॥१९॥

At solstice, eclipse, or feast,

One ball is offered at least. [19]

एकोद्दिष्टं परित्यज्य पार्वणं कुरुते द्विजः ।

अकृतं तद्विजानीयात्स मातापितृघातकः ॥२०॥

If one neglects the monthly stay,

He sins against his sires that day. [20]

अमायां वैक्षयो यस्य प्रेतपक्षेऽथवा यदि ।

सपिंडीकरणादूर्ध्वं तस्योक्तः पार्वणो विधिः ॥२१॥

If new moon falls in sires’ side,

Parvana rite is then applied. [21]

त्रिदंडग्रहणादेव प्रेतत्वं नैव जायते ।

अहन्येकादशे प्राप्ते पार्वणन्तु विधीयते ॥२२॥

By staff the soul is freed from fate,

On eleventh day Parvana’s state. [22]

यस्य संवत्सरादर्वाक्सपिंडीकरणं स्मृतम् ।

प्रत्यहं तत्सोदकुंभं दद्यात्संवत्सरं द्विजः ॥२३॥

If Sapinda rite is late delayed,

Daily water must be laid. [23]

पत्या चैकेन कर्तव्यं सपिंडीकरणं स्त्रियः ।

पितामह्यापि तत्तस्मिन्सत्येवन्तु क्षयेऽहनि ।

तस्यां सत्यां प्रकर्तव्यं तस्याः श्वश्व्रेति निश्चितम् ॥२४॥

By husband Sapinda rite is done,

For wife and grandsire one by one. [24]

विवाहे चैव निर्वृत्ते चतुर्थेऽहनि रात्रिषु ।

एकत्वं सा गता भर्तुः पिंडे गोत्रे च सूतके ॥२५॥

After marriage on fourth night stay,

Wife joins husband’s clan that day. [25]

स्वगोत्राद् भ्रश्यते नारी उद्वाहात्सप्तमे पदे ।

भर्तृगोत्रेण कर्तव्या दानपिंडोदकक्रिया ॥२६॥

At marriage rite the wife is bound,

Her husband’s clan the rites surround. [26]

द्विमातुः पिंडदानं तु पिंडे पिंडे द्विना मतः ।

षण्णां देयास्त्रयः पिडा एवं दाता न मुह्यति ॥२७॥

For two mothers balls are laid,

Three of six by rule displayed. [27]

अथ चेन्मन्त्रविद्युक्तः शारीरैः पंक्तिदूषणैः ।...
