Chapter 01
स्वयंभुवे नमस्कृत्य सृष्टिसंहारकारिणे।
चातुर्वर्ण्यहितार्थाय शंखः शास्त्रमकल्पयत् ॥१॥
To Self-born Lord with reverence due,
Creator, dissolver, ever true;
For fourfold castes their righteous frame,
Śaṅkha composed this law of name. [1]
यजनं याजनं दानं तथैवाध्यापनक्रिया।
प्रतिग्रहश्चाध्ययनं विप्रकर्माणि निर्दिशेत् ॥२॥
Sacrifice and teaching stay,
Receiving gifts in dharma’s way;
These are the Brahmin’s rightful role,
Thus dharma marks his noble soul. [2]
दानं चाध्ययनं चैव यजनं च यथाविधि।
क्षत्रियस्य च वैश्यस्य कर्मेदं परिकीर्तितम् ॥३॥
For Kshatriya and Vaishya too,
Study, gift, and rites are due;
Thus dharma marks their sacred frame,
And purity preserves their name. [3]
क्षत्रियस्य विशेषेण प्रजानां परिपालनम्।
कृषिगोरक्षवाणिज्यं विशश्च परिकीर्तितम् ॥४॥
The warrior guards the people’s stay,
The Vaishya farms and trades each day;
The Shudra serves with crafts and hand,
Thus dharma marks the social stand. [4]
शूद्रस्य द्विजशुश्रूषा सर्वशिल्पानि वाप्यथ।
क्षमा सत्यं दमः शौचं सर्वेषामविशेषतः ॥५॥
The Shudra serves the twice-born frame,
With crafts and arts his dharma’s name;
For all alike are virtues due,
Forgiveness, truth, and cleansing too. [5]
ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियो वैश्यस्त्रयो वर्णा द्विजातयः।
तेषां जन्म द्वितीयं तु विज्ञेयं मौंजिबंधनम् ॥६॥
Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya three,
Twice-born by sacred thread they be;
Their second birth by girdle’s stay,
Thus dharma marks the rightful way. [6]
आचार्यस्तु पिता प्रोक्तः सावित्री जननी तथा।
ब्राह्मणक्षत्रियविशां मौंजीबंधनजन्मनि ॥७॥
The teacher father is proclaimed,
The mother Savitri is named;
For Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya too,
By thread their second birth is true. [7]
वृत्त्या शूद्रसमास्तावद्विज्ञेयास्ते विचक्षणैः।
यावद्वेदे न जायंते द्विजा ज्ञेयास्ततः परम् ॥८॥
Till Veda’s lore they do not gain,
They live as Shudra’s worldly chain;
But once the sacred knowledge stays,
They rise as twice-born in dharma’s ways. [8]
इति श्रीशंखस्मृतौ प्रथमोऽध्यायः ॥१॥
Thus ends the first in Shankha’s frame,
The Dharma’s law of caste’s acclaim;
Recorded clear by sages’ hand,
Forever guide to righteous stand. [End]
Chapter 02
द्वितीयोऽध्यायः २
गर्भस्य स्फुटताज्ञानं निषेकः परिकीर्तितः।
पुरा तु स्पंदनारत्कार्यं पुंसवनं विचक्षणैः ॥१॥
When seed is placed the rite is known,
As quickening breath in womb is shown;
The rite of pumsavana stays,
Thus dharma marks the sacred ways. [1]
षष्ठेऽष्टमे वा सीमंतो जाते वै जातकर्म च।
आशौचे च व्यतिक्रांते नामकर्म विधीयते ॥२॥
In sixth or eighth the parting rite,
At birth the natal vows unite;
When impurity fades away,
The naming rite is due that day. [2]
नामधेयं च कर्तव्यं वर्णानां च समाक्षरम्।
मांगल्यं ब्राह्मणस्योक्तं क्षत्रियस्य बलान्वितम् ॥३॥
The name must fit the caste’s design,
For Brahmin blessed, for Kshatriya fine;
With fortune, strength, their names are made,
Thus dharma marks the sacred grade. [3]
वैश्यस्य धनसंयुक्तं शूद्रस्य तु जुगुप्सितम्।
शर्मोतं ब्राह्मणस्योक्तं वर्मोतं क्षत्रियस्य तु ॥४॥
For Vaishya wealth, for Shudra plain,
For Brahmin sharma marks the name;
For Kshatriya varma stays,
Thus dharma guides their rightful ways. [4]
धनांतं चैव वैश्यस्य दासांतं चांत्यजन्मनः।
चतुर्थे मासि कर्तव्यं बालस्यादित्यदर्शनम् ॥५॥
Vaishya’s name with wealth is bound,
For Shudra servitude is found;
In fourth month child must see the sun,
Thus dharma’s rite is duly done. [5]
षष्ठेऽन्नप्राशनं मासि चूडा कार्या यथाकुलम्।
गर्भाष्टमेऽब्दे कर्तव्यं ब्राह्मणस्योपनायनम् ॥६॥
In sixth month food is first bestowed,
The tuft is cut as custom showed;
In eighth year Brahmin’s thread is tied,
Thus dharma marks his second stride. [6]
गर्भादेकादशे राज्ञो गर्भाद्द्वादशमे विशः।
षोडशाब्दानि विप्रस्य राजन्यस्य द्विविंशतिः ॥७॥
In eleventh year the king is bound,
In twelfth the Vaishya’s rite is found;
Sixteen for Brahmin’s sacred stay,
For Kshatriya twenty-two the way. [7]
विंशतिः सचतुष्का तु वैश्यस्य परिकीर्तिता।
नातिवर्तेत सावित्रीमत ऊर्ध्वं निवर्तते ॥८॥
Twenty-four the Vaishya’s frame,
Beyond the Savitri brings shame;
Thus dharma marks the rightful stand,
And purity by vow is planned. [8]
विज्ञातव्यास्त्रयोऽप्येते यथाकालमसंस्कृताः।
सावित्रीपतिता व्रात्याः सर्वधर्मबहिष्कृताः ॥९॥
Untrained at time the three are bound,
As fallen men by sages found;
Exiled from dharma’s holy stay,
Thus dharma marks their sinful way. [9]
मौंजीज्याबंधनानां तु क्रमान्मौंज्यः प्रकीर्तिताः।
मार्गवैयाघ्रबास्तानि चर्माणि ब्रह्मचारिणाम् ॥१०॥
The girdle made of grass is tied,
Of tiger skin or deer beside;
For Brahmacharin’s sacred frame,
Thus dharma marks the rightful name. [10]
पर्णपिप्पलबिल्वानां क्रमाद्दंडाः प्रकीर्तिताः।
केशदेशललाटास्य तुल्याः प्रोक्ताः क्रमेण तु ॥११॥
Staffs of fig or bilva stay,
Equal to hair or brow’s display;
Thus dharma marks the staff’s design,
For Brahmacharin’s holy sign. [11]
अवक्राः सत्वचः सर्वे अनग्न्येधास्तथैव च।
वस्त्रोपवीते कार्पासक्षौमोर्णानां यथाक्रमम् ॥१२॥
Straight and smooth the hides are bound,
Unburnt by fire their worth is found;
Threads of cotton, silk, or wool,
Thus dharma marks the sacred rule. [12]
आदिमध्यावसानेषु भवच्छब्दोपलक्षितम्।
भैक्ष्यस्याचरणं प्रोक्तं वर्णानामनुपूर्वशः ॥१३॥
At first, mid, last the word is shown,
For begging rite by caste is known;
Thus dharma marks the ordered frame,
And purity preserves the name. [13]
