DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF COGNITIVE FUNCTIONING
"To think holistically means to listen to the data of the mind, the voice of intuition, and the silence between emotions."
Aleksandra Božović
Analytical Thinking
Analytical thinking is the ability to identify patterns, draw conclusions, and solve problems using logic and structure. People with strong analytical skills often notice problems more quickly and propose effective solutions. Simply put, analytical thinking is an individual`s ability to understand the essence of a phenomenon, recognize cause-and-effect relationships, break down complex problems into their components, and compare options to choose the best solution.
One key factor in successful team leadership is high mental intelligence. Leaders with developed cognitive abilities can recognize their team`s needs, process information quickly and accurately, and direct collaborators toward the right goals. For example, Warren Buffett, one of the most successful investors of all time, built his success on analytical thinking – on the ability to assess markets and maintain emotional control when making investment decisions. Such leaders not only devise effective strategies but also inspire and motivate their teams. Their ability to understand and analyze a situation enables them to provide clear instructions and support team members during challenging moments.
Exercises to Develop Analytical Thinking:
Puzzles –– Many recommend jigsaw puzzles or crosswords for mental training, but if you truly want to develop your attention and analytical ability, it`s better not just to collect puzzles but to actively solve them yourself. This more creative way of exercising the mind is more complex and thus more productive for mental development.
Maps –– If your family or social circle enjoys spending time together, treasure hunts using maps can be a great educational exercise for everyone. Reading maps requires mentally translating real objects into symbols representing them, and vice versa. Thus, this game is equally beneficial for those who draw and mark the map and for those who later try to read and decode it.
Codes and Ciphers –– Memorizing and interpreting any kind of codes can serve as excellent simulation for analytical thinking. Try to remember codes made up of various letters and symbols – it will significantly stimulate your analytical thinking.
Jigsaw Puzzles –– Assemble puzzles, various brainteasers, or a Rubik`s cube. A good thing about puzzles is that they force us to plan our moves several steps ahead.
Board Games –– Strategic board games are very effective tools for developing analytical skills. (We do not mean games where success is solely determined by luck, such as children`s dice games showing the number of moves.) Only games that require players to carefully consider each next move, taking into account opponents’ actions and, if possible, predicting or provoking certain responses, are very effective for developing analytical thinking. Such games develop the following skills:
- Recognizing motives behind others’ actions;
- Understanding the logic behind other people`s behavior;
- Predicting others’ possible decisions;
- Choosing the right moves as responses to others’ actions.
Chess –– One should not forget the proven game of chess! Chess is one of those games that requires players to analyze the board situation and develop a strategy while trying to uncover the opponent`s plan. So, besides analytical thinking, strategic thinking is also exercised here.
Creative Thinking
Creative thinking is the ability to develop new ideas and concepts or to approach existing problems innovatively. Creative individuals often have unusual perspectives and can connect seemingly unrelated information. Mental intelligence is a fundamental trait of all great leaders and innovators. For example, Albert Einstein, the genius of the XX century, became a symbol of intellectual superiority due to his ability to think outside the box. His theory of relativity was not just a mathematical expression but a revolution in how we think about space and time. His mental intelligence allowed him to develop concepts that shattered traditional views and opened doors to new scientific knowledge.
Creativity is one of the key attributes of mental intelligence, clearly reflected in the works of famous artists and innovators. In the XIX century, painter Vincent van Gogh struggled with many personal demons, but his ability to transform his feelings into extraordinary artworks still amazes us today. His famous work, “Starry Night,” shows how deep emotional experiences can be shaped through a sharp creative mind. Creativity is often considered an essential component of mental intelligence because it allows people to think “outside the box” and develop innovative ideas. In the business world, creative thinking can lead to unusual solutions, reminding us of leaders like Steve Jobs, who shaped the technology industry with products such as the iPhone and iPad.
Creativity does not stem only from art – even in science, such as medicine, innovations often come from researchers capable of viewing problems from new perspectives. For example, visionary doctors like Paul Farmer worked to provide healthcare and resources to poor communities, using a novel approach to seemingly unsolvable problems. Or recall visionaries like Walt Disney, whose imagination left an indelible mark not only on the film industry but also on how people experience entertainment and culture. His vision, innovations, and ability to inspire and connect people have lived on for generations after his death.
In the XXI century, we see many examples of people using mental intelligence to innovate and change the world. Elon Musk, founder of companies like Tesla and SpaceX, uses his cognitive ability to think about humanity`s future in space and on Earth. His visions of colonizing Mars, developing electric cars, and implanting the first brain chips are results not only of his knowledge but also of his ability to connect different ideas and technological innovations. In a rapidly changing world, investing in mental intelligence can be the key to achieving personal and professional goals.
Exercises to Develop Creative Thinking:
Contact with Nature –– It is known that nature positively affects both body and mind. Besides relaxing us and returning us to our source, nature also gives us ideas and inspiration for great undertakings. The fact is that everything created by human hands is actually mankind`s effort to imitate nature. Just as the Sun gives us warmth and light, humans, striving to imitate nature, have created heating bodies designed to provide warmth and light. A short daily walk in nature offers many benefits beyond pure physical relaxation. Use the advantages nature offers and allow it to inspire and deepen your creativity.
Daydreaming and the World of Fantasy –– We all know that children, due to a large number of theta brain waves, are very prone to a world of fantasy where they build entire worlds invisible to adults. Learn from children, spend time with them, and consciously engage in their games and conversations to acquire the skill of creative thinking. The truth is, as we grow older, we produce fewer theta brain waves — so never fully “grow up”! We know what Walt Disney created precisely from creative thinking. The entire world that physically did not exist – the world of invented characters, castles, magic, and wondrous landscapes known to every child today – came from his world of imagination and fantasy. Everything you see around you first existed in someone`s mind as an idea.
The ability to imagine without limits and to transfer those ideas from the fantasy world into reality is a very important component of success. Allow yourself to dream without boundaries, because there is no rule about what is possible and what is not. Believe in your visions. Walt Disney was rejected and misunderstood many times in his ideas, but what led him to success despite all that was his belief in his imagined, invisible world. His life`s work and everything he left behind are pure proof that nothing is impossible. If you can see something in your mind, it is quite possible that one day you will hold it in your hands.
Writing –– Keep a journal and write about your dreams. Writing has an incredible power to help us access the realization of goals that we have put on paper. Many people consider it pointless to write down something they already know well and clearly keep in their heads. But this is not about conscious realization; it is about how your brain searches for solutions when thoughts and plans are brought outside its head – onto paper. The process of consideration and analysis in the brain happens differently when the problem is visualized and written down. Try it yourself and see: it is like getting an additional helper who, together with your conscious and subconscious mind, observes the situation – thus you get more ideas and possible solutions.
