Introduction
I compiled this short book so readers can benefit from selected beliefs and deeds needed every day, at every moment of life. For this, I chose narrations from Sahih al-Bukhari, the most authentic book of Hadith after the Qur’an, agreed upon by the scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah. While other Hadith collections are valuable, Sahih al-Bukhari stands first in rank.
In this book, I provide selected Hadiths with short commentary. Occasionally, I will also bring Hadith from other reliable books, always with reference. My intention is to make these lessons simple for Muslims worldwide—especially for new Muslims—so they can strengthen their faith (iman). May Allah ﷻ accept this effort for me, for you, and for the Ummah.
Foreword
In a world filled with distractions, trials, and shifting values, the heart of a believer faces constant tests. Faith (Iman) is not merely a matter of words or private conviction; it is a living, breathing reality that must be nurtured through knowledge, reflection, and action. It is this understanding that inspired the creation of Iman Explained: Words, Deeds, and How to Remain Steadfast in Trials.
This book is a humble yet profound attempt to guide readers through the essential aspects of faith—its beliefs, its manifestations in deeds, and the practical methods to remain steadfast during life’s challenges. Drawing upon the Qur’an, authentic Hadith, and the examples of the Prophet ﷺ, his companions, and the righteous predecessors, it provides a roadmap for spiritual growth that is both authentic and applicable to modern life.
One of the distinguishing features of this work is its focus on practical guidance. Beyond mere theory, it emphasizes the connection between belief and action, showing that true Iman is reflected in daily choices, sincere worship, humility, and awareness of Allah. It reminds us that faith is tested not only in times of ease but also in adversity, and that trials serve to strengthen our devotion and reliance on Allah.
The author, Qari Tariq Azizi, brings clarity and accessibility to complex concepts, making the timeless teachings of Islam approachable for readers of all backgrounds. Through thoughtfully selected narrations, reflections, and actionable steps, this book inspires the reader to live a life of sincerity, mindfulness, and spiritual resilience.
It is my hope that this work will serve as a source of guidance and inspiration for readers everywhere, helping them to strengthen their faith, cultivate a soft and humble heart, and remain steadfast in the face of challenges. May Allah accept this effort, benefit all who read it, and make it a means of drawing closer to Him.

What Is Iman?
The word iman in the Arabic language means belief, trust, and affirmation. In Islamic terminology, it refers to:
In simpler words: Iman is words and deeds together.
Interestingly, the Qur’an and Sunnah never give us a dictionary-style definition of iman. Instead, they describe its qualities and attributes—encouraging us to live by them rather than make empty claims. Islam teaches that what we say must be confirmed by our actions, in accordance with Qur’an and Sunnah.
Difference Between Aqeedah and Iman
Two terms are often used together: aqeedah and iman.
"Whoever says La ilaha illallah will enter Paradise."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 5827; Sahih Muslim, no. 94)
"When a person commits zina, he does not remain a believer at the time of committing it."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 6810; Sahih Muslim, no. 57)
This means iman decreases when we sin, but it returns upon repentance.
The Rise and Fall of Iman
Every Muslim knows the experience: in salah, we feel iman stronger; outside, the same spiritual state fades. Scholars explain that iman increases with obedience and decreases with disobedience.
Allah ﷻ says:
وَيَزْدَادَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِيمَانًا
“…that those who believe may increase in faith.”
(Surah al-Muddaththir 74:31)
And:
لِيَزْدَادُوا إِيمَانًا مَعَ إِيمَانِهِمْ
“…so that they may increase in faith along with their (present) faith.”
(Surah al-Fath 48:4)
Imam Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله mentioned five habits that harden the heart and weaken iman: eating too much, drinking too much, sleeping too much, speaking too much, and excessive socializing.
Thus, iman is dynamic: it grows with Qur’an, salah, dhikr, and good deeds, and it shrinks with sins, heedlessness, and worldly distractions.
Pillars of Islam: Foundation of Iman
Hadith 1: The Five Pillars
Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 8
Arabic:
بُنِيَ الْإِسْلَامُ عَلَى خَمْسٍ شَهَادَةِ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ وَالْحَجِّ وَصَوْمِ رَمَضَانَ
Translation:
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Islam is built on five pillars: to testify that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger; to establish prayer; to pay zakat; to perform Hajj; and to fast in Ramadan.”
Commentary
