18) Special Sacrifices & Observances

अथ अथाष्टादशः पटलः

अथ वक्ष्यामि संक्षेपात्‌ प्रतिष्ठाविधिमुत्तमम्।

वास्तुयागं पुरा कृत्वा मुहूर्त्ते स्थापनं भवेत्॥१॥

Now I declare in noble tone,

The rite of consecration shown;

With Vāstu-yajña first performed,

The image set at time adorned. [1]

कृत्वा नान्दीमुखं शक्त्या षडष्टौ द्वादशाथवा।

भोजयेद्‌ बाह्यणान्‌ शान्तान्‌ वैष्णवांस्तु विशेषतः॥२॥

With opening rite the feast is laid,

Six, eight, or twelve are duly paid;

Brahmins calm and Vaiṣṇavas dear,

Are honored with devotion clear. [2]

दद्याद्वस्त्राङ्गुलीयादि हिरण्यं च स्वशक्तितः।

प्रासादस्य तु सर्वस्य मार्जनं कारयेत्ततः॥३॥

Cloths and rings with gold are given,

By strength of will, the gifts are driven;

Then temple cleansed in every part,

Prepared with reverence from the heart. [3]

तथाचाभ्यन्तरं दर्भैः सशलाकैः प्रयत्नतः।

पञ्चगव्येन गन्धैश्च प्रोक्ष्य मूलाभिमन्त्रितैः॥४॥

Inside with kusa grass adorned,

With scented sprays the shrine is warmed;

Fivefold cow-gifts sanctify,

With mantras pure the rites comply. [4]

होमार्थं वालुकाभिस्तु मासादस्य समन्ततः।

कारयेच्चतुरश्राणि स्थण्डिलानि यथाक्रमम्॥५॥

For homa’s need the sands are spread,

Four squares arranged as scriptures said;

In ordered form the ground is blessed,

The altar stands in holy rest. [5]

दिक्षु चाष्टासु कृत्वैवमष्टौ कलशान्‌ न्यसेत्।

कुसुमोदकसम्पूर्णान्‌ सपिधानान्‌ सपल्लवान्॥६॥

In eight directions vessels stay,

With flowers and waters full array;

Covered, adorned with leaves they shine,

Their presence marks the rite divine. [6]

सप्तसप्तविभागेन गर्भागारे विभाजिते।

ब्रह्मदेवमनुष्याणां पिशाचानां पदानि तु॥७॥

The inner shrine in parts is drawn,

Seven by seven its lines are born;

For gods, for men, for spirits near,

Their stations marked with order clear. [7]

मध्यादारभ्य यत्नेन क्रमाद्‌ ज्ञेयानि सर्वतः।

ब्राह्मः पञ्चदशांशः स्याद्‌ देवभागास्त्रयोदश॥८॥

From center outward parts are known,

Fifteen for Brahma’s seat are shown;

Thirteen for gods their place declare,

The scheme is traced with patient care. [8]

एकादश नवांशाश्च शिष्टयोः पृष्ठभागतः।

गमनं त्रिविधं प्रोक्तं पृष्ठसौम्येशभेदतः॥९॥

Eleven, nine for rest remain,

Behind their portion still sustain;

Three paths of movement sages tell,

By back, by moon, by lord they dwell. [9]

कल्पनीयं यथान्यायं द्रव्यसंस्थानयोगतः।

स्थितासीनशयनानां स्थानानि परिकल्पयेत्॥१०॥

According to the law of place,

The seats and beds their forms embrace;

For standing, sitting, lying too,

Their stations set in order true. [10]

ब्रह्मांशे मध्यमं त्यक्ता द्वितीय चापि पृष्ठतः।

स्थितैकबेरबिम्बस्य तृतीये स्थानमिष्यते॥११॥

In Brahma’s part the middle stays,

The second rests in rearward ways;

Kubera’s image third is found,

Its station firm on sacred ground. [11]

त्रिभक्ते द्वारविस्तारतिसप्तांशेषु मध्यमे।

मध्यार्धेनोत्तरे सूत्रं गमनार्थं प्रकल्पयेत्॥१२॥

Threefold the doorway’s width is made,

In seventh part the path is laid;

By middle line the north is spanned,

A thread of passage guides the land. [12]

पश्रिमोत्तरसंयोगे कर्णसूत्रं प्रकत्प्य तु।

बिम्बाङ्गुलियवेनैशे गमयेद्‌ द्वियवेन वा॥१३॥

West and north in union stay,

Ear-thread marks the measured way;

By finger’s grain the image goes,

Or double barley’s span it shows. [13]

ब्रह्मभागं परित्यज्य स्थानार्चा स्थाप्यते यदि।

तन्मण्डाधिपो राजा स्थापकश्च विनश्यति॥१४॥

If Brahma’s part is left aside,

And image placed in other side;

The king, the builder both shall fall,

Their work undone, their fate in thrall. [14]

क्रिया च निष्फलैव स्यात्‌ तस्माद्यत्नेन मापयेत्।

किञ्चिन्मानुषमाश्रित्य कुर्यादासनकर्म च॥१५॥

The rite is void if wrongly done,

So measure true beneath the sun;

With human scale the seat is made,

Its form in careful order laid. [15]

देवमानुषभागाभ्यां कुर्यच्च शयनं बुधः।

अर्चनापीठिका ब्राह्मे स्थापना दैविके यदा॥१६॥

Wise men place the couch with care,

In god and human parts they share;

The altar seat in Brahma’s zone,

In godly section stands alone. [16]

मानुषेऽस्य परीवारः पैशाचे त्वायुधानि च।

कूत्वा पादशिलास्थानं वृत्तं वा चतुरश्रकम्॥१७॥

In human part attendants stay,

In Rakshasic arms are laid away;

The foot-stone set in circle round,

Or square in form on sacred ground. [17]

पादपीठस्य चाधस्तात्‌ ततो बह्मशिलां न्यसेत्।

त्वमेव परमा शाक्तिस्त्वमेवासनधारिका॥१८॥

Beneath the foot the Brahma-stone,

Supports the seat, its strength is shown;

“O Goddess, thou the power supreme,

The throne’s support, eternal beam.” [18]

देवाज्ञया त्वया देवि! स्थातव्यमिह सर्वदा।

इति विज्ञाप्य तां पूर्वं...
