The German language has a great proverb for "dilemma": "Sitting between chairs." Peter Wortsman’s beautifully crafted essays on translation, as well as his introductions to his translations of German literature, demonstrate his mastery in dealing with this dilemma. He straddles his two native languages, German, and English, which he once described as a "Hybrid Anglo-Saxon-Norman language." To translate German the way he does, to write English the way he does, he needs a third chair: French, the "Norman" component of English. His works demonstrate that it is only through writing and translating between these three languages that his essays and translations are so rich and deep.

Peter Wortsman wurde als „Bruder Grimm des 20. Jahrhunderts“ (Bloomsbury Review) und „delinquenter Hans Christian Andersen“ (vom Dramatiker Mark O'Donnell) bezeichnet. Er ist Autor von Belletristik und Sachbüchern, Theaterstücken, Gedichten, Reisebeschreibungen und Werken in undefinierbaren Formen. Zuletzt erschien Odd Birds & Fat Cats (An Urban Bestiary), das in Zusammenarbeit mit seiner Tochter Aurélie Bernard Wortsman entstand, wobei er den Text und sie die Illustrationen beisteuerte. Er ist auch ein von der Kritik gefeierter Übersetzer aus dem Deutschen. Zu seinen englischen Übersetzungen gehören die Anthologie Tales from the German Imagination (Penguin Classics, UK, 2013), die er auch zusammengestellt hat, und zuletzt The Golden Pot, and other tales of the uncanny von E.T.A. Hoffmann (Archipelago Books, 2023), das für den Helene-und-Kurt-Wolff-Übersetzerpreis nominiert wurde. Als ehemaliger Stipendiat der Fulbright Foundation (1973), der Thomas J. Watson Foundation (1974) und Holtzbrinck-Stipendiat an der American Academy in Berlin (2010) wurde er für seine schriftstellerische Tätigkeit mit dem Beard’s Fund Short Story Award (1985) und dem Independent Publishers Book Award (2014) ausgezeichnet.
