Through the innovative methodological prism of polycentricity and plurality, this collective volume illuminates the rich religious past of Eastern-Central Europe by examining the multifaceted and dynamic relations between its Christianities, considered here as communities of interactions. Following the baptism of Rus’ at the end of the 10th century, religious life in the region tended to centre around Kyiv, while other centres with different significances and profiles developed concurrently. Polycentricity became even more pronounced with the advent of the Reformation, the Counter-Reformation, and the Enlightenment. As a part of global Christianity, the Kyivan Christianities maintained vast connections and navigated a delicate balance between major poles such as Rome and Constantinople.

Birgit Emich ist Professorin für Geschichte der Frühen Neuzeit an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main. Sie hat in Freiburg Geschichte und Politikwissenschaften studiert und war von 2010 bis 2016 Inhaberin des Lehrstuhls für Geschichte der Frühen Neuzeit an der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. Sie ist Mitglied im Verband der Historiker und Historikerinnen Deutschlands sowie in der Vereinigung für Verfassungsgeschichte. Von 2012 bis 2019 gehörte sie dem Fachkollegium Geschichtswisssenschaft der DFG an. Sie ist Mitherausgeberin mehrerer Zeitschriften und Reihen sowie Mitglied der Wissenschaftlichen Beiräte der Gerda-Henkel-Stiftung, des Deutschen Historischen Instituts in Rom, des Leibniz-Instituts für Europäische Geschichte in Mainz sowie des Historischen Kollegs in München. Aktuell leitet sie die DFG-Kollegforschungsgruppe "Polyzentrik und Pluralität vormoderner Christentümer" an der Universität Frankfurt am Main.
Dr. Markus Friedrich ist Professor für Geschichte der Frühen Neuzeit an der Universität Hamburg.
Christian Windler ist Professor emeritus für Neuere Geschichte am Historischen Institut der Universität Bern.
