This book is devoted to the analysis and interpretation of the two Samʾalian inscriptions on the statues of Hadad and of Panamuwa II, discovered near Zincirli in the northern Levant. These inscriptions, commissioned by the kings Panamuwa I and Panamuwa II, were manufactured in the eighth century BCE. Not only are the inscriptions an important source of information on the kingdom of Samʾal/Yʾdy and its governance, but they also illuminate the larger North Syrian political context, including the Neo-Assyrian strategy of subordinating local rulers. The book offers a new epigraphic, philological, literary and historical analysis of these two inscriptions.

Autor

Jan Dušek, Ph.D. (2005), École Pratique des Hautes Études, Paris, works as a researcher at the Charles University in Prague. He has published on Aramaic epigraphy, including Les manuscrits araméens du Wadi Daliyeh et la Samarie vers 450–332 av. J.-C. (Brill, 2007), and Aramaic and Hebrew Inscriptions from Mt. Gerizim and Samaria between Antiochus III and Antiochus IV Epiphanes (Brill, 2012).
