The Nyaya Sutra starts the plea,
For valid means of knowing, free.
It speaks of sixteen topics grand,
To truly grasp and understand.
Proof and comparison we find,
Are tools to clarify the mind.
Perception shows the world we see,
While inference aids certainty.
Doubt and purpose frame the start,
To guide inquiry in the heart.
The goal is liberation's gain,
To break the cycle of the pain.
By ending false ideas deep,
The soul awakens from its sleep.
Thus, logic offers wisdom's door,
To know the truth, and nothing more.
Chapter 1
अथ प्रथमः अध्यायः
Section 1
(The Fourth Contract)
प्रथमम् आह्निकम् अनुबन्धचतुष्टयप्रकरणम्
प्रमाण-प्रमेय-संशय-प्रयोजन-दृष्टान्त-सिद्धान्तावयव-तर्क-निर्णय-वाद-जल्प-वितण्डाहेत्वाभास-च्छल-जाति-निग्रहस्थानानाम्तत्त्वज्ञानात् निःश्रेयसाधिगमः ॥१॥
By knowing truth completely,
Supreme good is gained surely. [1]
दुःखजन्मप्रवृत्तिदोषमिथ्याज्ञानानाम् उत्तरोत्तरापाये तदनन्तरा पायात् अपवर्गः ॥२॥
When sorrow fades sequentially,
Liberation dawns eternally. [2]
प्रत्यक्षानुमानोपमानशब्दाः प्रमाणानि ॥३॥
Perception, inference, word, analogy,
Are valid means of truth truly. [3]
इन्द्रियार्थसन्निकर्षोत्पन्नम् ज्ञानम् अव्यपदेश्यम् अव्यभिचारि व्यवसायात्मकम् प्रत्यक्षम् ॥४॥
Sense and object joined rightly,
Perception arises decisively. [4]
अथ तत्पूर्वकं त्रिविधम् अनुमानं पूर्ववत् शेषवत् सामान्यतोदृष्टं च ॥५॥
Inference works diversely,
From prior, residue, or generally. [5]
प्रसिद्धसाधर्म्यात् साध्यसाधनम् उपमानम् ॥६॥
From likeness known publicly,
Comparison proves fittingly. [6]
आप्तोपदेशः शब्दः ॥७॥
Trusted teaching spoken verily,
Is testimony reliably. [7]
सः द्विविधः दृष्टादृष्टार्थत्वात् ॥८॥
Of seen and unseen equally,
Word divides distinctively. [8]
आत्मशरीरेन्द्रियार्थबुद्धिमनःप्रवृत्तिदोषप्रेत्यभावफलदुःखापवर्गाः तु प्रमेयम् ॥९॥
Soul, body, senses, mind wholly,
Objects, faults, rebirth, fruit, sorrow, release—knowably. [9]
इच्छाद्वेषप्रयत्नसुखदुःखज्ञानानि आत्मनः लिङ्गम् इति ॥१०॥
Desire, aversion, effort steadily,
Pleasure, pain, and knowledge—marks of soul clearly. [10]
चेष्टेन्द्रियार्थाश्रयः शरीरम् ॥११॥
Body holds senses bodily,
And grounds activity properly. [11]
घ्राणरसनचक्षुस्त्वक्श्रोत्राणि इन्द्रियाणि भूतेभ्यः ॥१२॥
Nose, tongue, eye, skin, ear sensibly,
From elements arise naturally. [12]
पृथिवी आपः तेजः वायुः आकाशम् इति भूतानि ॥१३॥
Earth, water, fire, air, and sky,
Are elements abidingly. [13]
गन्धरसरूपस्पर्शशब्दाः पृथिव्यादिगुणाः तदर्थाः ॥१४॥
Smell, taste, form, touch, sound jointly,
Qualities of elements rightly. [14]
बुद्धिः उपलब्धिः ज्ञानम् इति अनर्थान्तरम् ॥१५॥
Intellect, apprehension, knowledge equally,
Are synonyms expressed wholly. [15]
युगपत् ज्ञानानुत्पत्तिः मनसः लिङ्गम् ॥१६॥
Mind is marked distinctively,
By non-simultaneous knowing only. [16]
प्रवृत्तिः वाग्बुद्धिशरीरारम्भः ॥१७॥
Activity begins bodily,
In speech, thought, and deed jointly. [17]
प्रवर्त्तनालक्षणाः दोषाः ॥१८॥
Faults are known causally,
By instigation primarily. [18]
पुनरुत्पत्तिः प्रेत्यभावः ॥१९॥
Rebirth is existence repeatedly,
After death continuing endlessly. [19]
प्रवृत्तिदोषजनितः अर्थः फलम् ॥२०॥
Fruit arises causally,
From fault and activity jointly. [20]
बाधनालक्षणम् दुःखम् ॥२१॥
Sorrow is marked painfully,
By obstruction unceasingly. [21]
तदत्यन्तविमोक्षः अपवर्गः ॥२२॥
Liberation shines finally,
Release attained eternally. [22]
समानानेकधर्मोपपत्तेः विप्रतिपत्तेः उपलब्ध्यनुपलब्ध्यव्यवस्थातः च विशेषापेक्षः विमर्शः संशयः ॥२३॥
Doubt arises naturally,
From conflict, perception, or non-perception equally. [23]
यम् अर्थम् अधिकृत्य प्रवर्तते तत् प्रयोजनम् ॥२४॥
Purpose is that aim wholly,
For which one acts steadily. [24]
लौकिकपरीक्षकाणां यस्मिन् अर्थे बुद्धिसाम्यम् सः दृष्टान्तः ॥२५॥
Example is agreed commonly,
By worldly examiners jointly. [25]
तन्त्राधिकरणाभ्युपगमसंस्थितिः सिद्धान्तः ॥२६॥
Principle stands firmly,
Established in doctrine securely. [26]
सः चतुर्विधः सर्वतन्त्रप्रतितन्त्राधिकरणाभ्युपगमसंस्थित्य-र्थान्तरभावात् ॥२७॥
Principle divides quadruply,
Universal, particular, contextual, assumptively. [27]
सर्वतन्त्राविरुद्धः तन्त्रे अधिकृतः अर्थः सर्वतन्त्रसिद्धान्तः ॥२८॥
Unopposed universally,
Is principle accepted wholly. [28]
समानतन्त्रसिद्धः परतन्त्रासिद्धः प्रतितन्त्रसिद्धान्तः ॥२९॥
In one system only,
Principle holds particularly. [29]
यत्सिद्धौ अन्यप्रकरणसिद्धिः सः अधिकरणसिद्धान्तः ॥३०॥
Context proves accordingly,
Ensuring other doctrines fittingly. [30]
अपरीक्षिताभ्युपगमात् तद्विशेषपरीक्षणम् अभ्युपगमसिद्धान्तः ॥३१॥
Assumption stands tentatively,
Till tested specifically. [31]
प्रतिज्ञाहेतूदाहरणोपनयनिगमनानि अवयवाः ॥३२॥
Proposition, reason, example, application, conclusion jointly,
Are parts of argument wholly. [32]
साध्यनिर्देशः प्रतिज्ञा ॥३३॥
Proposition states clearly,
What is to be proved surely. [33]
उदाहरणसाधर्म्यात् साध्यसाधनं हेतुः ॥३४॥
Reason works fittingly,
From likeness demonstrably. [34]
तथा वैधर्म्यात् ॥३५॥
So too from difference rightly,
Reason proves oppositely. [35]
साध्यसाधर्म्यात् तद्धर्मभावी दृष्टान्तः उदाहरणम् ॥३६॥
Example shows commonly,
Attribute of probandum rightly. [36]
तद्विपर्ययात् वा विपरीतम् ॥३७॥
Or contrariwise oppositely,
Example stands diversely. [37]
उदाहरणापेक्षः तथा इति उपसंहारः न तथा इति वा साध्यस्य उपनयः ॥३८॥
Application draws fittingly,
Probandum to example rightly. [38]
हेत्वपदेशात् प्रतिज्ञायाः पुनर्वचनम् निगमनम् ॥३९॥
Conclusion repeats formally,
Proposition by reason surely. [39]
अविज्ञाततत्वे अर्थे कारणोपपत्तितः तत्त्वज्ञानार्थम् उहः तर्कः ॥४०॥
Reasoning works tentatively,
For truth when cause is uncertainly. [40]
