Tattva Samasa Sankhya Sutra

Dedication

To him who knew the truths by birth,

Great Kapila of sacred worth;

In primal dawn he spoke wisely,

We bow to him respectfully. [1]

Now we begin the thread clearly,

Of Sankhya truths declared concisely;

The tattvas shine sequentially,

To guide the soul progressively. [2]

A braahman grieved by pain severely,

Approached the sage most reverently;

He bowed with heart surrendered wholly,

And sought the path devotedly.

He spoke his name and clan sincerely,

Declared his texts and lineage clearly;

With folded hands he asked humbly,

To learn the truth eternally.

“O Lord, what’s highest here truly?

What act fulfills one perfectly?

What leads to peace unshakably?

Please guide me now compassionately.”

The sage replied with voice calmly,

“I’ll speak the truths sequentially;

The path of Sankhya flows purely,

And lifts the soul sublimely.”

Eight roots arise invisibly,

They shape the world continually. [3]

Sixteen forms emerge subtly,

From nature’s womb spontaneously. [4]

The Self remains unbound wholly,

It watches all unchangingly. [5]

Three traits arise instinctively,

Sattva, Rajas, Tamas equally. [6]

Creation flows expansively,

From cause to form progressively. [7]

Return dissolves all visibly,

To rest in source eternally. [8]

The self, the world, the gods jointly,

Are realms of truth cosmically. [9]

Five senses grasp the world outwardly,

In sound and touch and sight bodily. [10]

Five acts arise maternally,

To shape the limbs functionally. [11]

Five vital winds move rhythmically,

They stir the breath continually. [12]

Five agents act obediently,

To serve the soul respectfully. [13]

Five joints of ignorance subtly,

Bind the soul deceptively. [14]

Twenty-eight powers rise diversely,

To shape the traits instinctively. [15]

Ninefold joy flows inwardly,

From truth perceived spiritually. [16]

Eightfold powers bloom mystically,

From yogic light sublimely. [17]

Tenfold roots arise sweetly,

To heal the flesh medicinally. [18]

Graceful birth flows lovingly,

From sattvic acts maternally. [19]

Fourteen kinds of beings truly,

Arise from nature sequentially. [20]

Threefold humors stir bodily,

To shape the health accordingly. [21]

Threefold bonds arise subtly,

To hold the soul mistakenly. [22]

Threefold paths to freedom be,

Release, absorption, sovereignty. [23]

Threefold proof flows logically,

Perception, word, and certainty. [24]

Threefold pain flows bodily,

Mental, divine, and worldly. [25]

Who knows these truths completely,

Is freed from pain entirely.

Thus ends the thread respectfully,

Of Sankhya truths declared concisely.

Now what are the eight roots, we ask sincerely,

Their nature shines through form invisibly.

Unmanifest, buddhi, ego respectively,

And five tanmaatras rise collectively.

Unlike the pot or wall we see outwardly,

This root remains concealed entirely.

No sense can grasp it perceptibly,

It lies beyond reach of touch or eye clearly.

It has no start, no end, no parts bodily,

It stands alone, whole and eternally.

Soundless, touchless, formless utterly,

Beyond all taste and scent entirely;

No start, no end, no change to see,

The sages call it Pradhaana truly. [26]

Subtle, formless, inert completely,

Unborn, undying, it flows silently;

It bears all forms yet stands singly,

This root is shared most universally.

It’s known by names that rise diversely,

Each pointing to its depth uniquely.

Avyaktam, Pradhaana, Brahma supremely,

The field, the root, the changeless firmly;

The source of forms, the dark unseen,

The womb of all that’s ever been.

Now what is buddhi? It is certainty,

The power to judge things clearly.

It knows the cow, not horse mistakenly,

It grasps the truth unerringly.

“This is a cow, not horse,” said firmly,

“This is a post, not man,” said rightly.
