Violent conflicts and global crises pose complex challenges for politics, society and churches. The new peace memorandum of the Council of the EKD takes a differentiated approach to questions of war and peace. At its heart is a further development of the ecumenical model of just peace. Based on biblical tradition and the tradition of the Reformation, the memorandum offers ethical criteria that can provide guidance for Christians – and it offers suggestions as to what churches, politicians and civil society can do to create a more peaceful world.

The memorandum refrains from offering simple answers and instead encourages thorough reflection and responsible action. In doing so, it counterbalances populist simplifications and provides impetus for public debate.
