Cherishing Each Child: Riley Hospital for Children, 1924-2024, the first comprehensive history of the hospital, chronicles Riley Hospital's beginnings, growth, and contributions over a century of care for millions of children who came to Riley as inpatients or outpatients from all over the world, including every Indiana county. Each chapter introduces readers by decade to hospital and medical leaders, advancements in growth, patient care, and pediatric research, and to unforgettable Riley patients. The enduring leadership from the hospital's earliest days of the Riley Memorial Association (now the Riley Children's Foundation) to shape and support the hospital's growth and capabilities is recognized as are contributions of long-time supporters of the hospital. Historical newspapers, original historical materials, department and program histories, historical publications, and interviews with former and current hospital patients, families, and staff all help to tell Riley Hospital's one hundred year story. Readers gain an understanding of the unique and distinctly Hoosier treasure that Riley Hospital for Children has been for generations of children and families. The book serves as a resource and celebration of the hospital's centennial, highlighting stories and milestones from its first century.
The Riley Children's Foundation is the fundraising organization for Riley Children's Health and the founding organization that opened the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children in 1924. Candace O'Connor is an award-winning, St. Louis-based, freelance writer and editor who specializes in historical and medical writing. The author of many books on Midwest history, her stories have appeared in local and national publications for over three decades. Candace received a 2001 regional Emmy for a documentary she wrote that aired nationally on PBS.
