First published in 2011, Maritime Heritage of Konkan examines the rich maritime legacy of the Konkan region in India, spanning from the 2nd century B.C. to the 17th century A.D. This legacy is reflected in early travel accounts, cave inscriptions, and references to numerous trading centers and ports engaged in overseas trade. The ports of Konkan played a crucial role in sustaining these trading relations. The region’s maritime heritage gained new prominence with the rise of Maratha power under Chhatrapati Shivaji, who established an indigenous navy that became a formidable force on the Konkan Coast. For 150 years, this navy successfully countered the Siddhis, European trading powers, and pirates, reaching its peak under Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre. However, the defeat of his son Tulaji Angre in 1756 marked the end of Indian maritime dominance in the region.

This book explores the maritime heritage of Konkan alongside the physical factors shaping its maritime character. It traces the rise and fall of ports along the Konkan Coast and the emergence of new ones over time. Additionally, it delves into traditional boat-building techniques, types of boats, navigational expertise, and the achievements of the Maratha Navy. Supported by numerous maps, illustrations, and photographs, this work serves as a valuable historical reference for scholars and researchers of Indian maritime heritage, history of Indian navigation, and history in general.

Sachin Pendse, Associate Professor, Tolani College of Commerce, Mumbai (at the time of the original publication). About the Maritime History Society: The Maritime History Society (MHS), an academic initiative of the Western Naval Command of the Indian Navy was established on 12 May 1978 by the late Vice Admiral MP Awati with a vision to promote the study of India’s maritime history. MHS has grown into a leading research organisation dedicated to exploring the country’s rich maritime heritage and naval legacy. As part of its academic mission, MHS undertakes a wide range of activities including publication of scholarly books, hosting seminars, lectures, workshops and curating maritime-themed museums, exhibitions and heritage projects including the National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal, Gujarat. The Society also maintains a well- curated gallery with over 2,000 artefacts, a reference library and digital presence featuring blogs and display of artefacts. Its collaboration with Talyor and Francis under the Routledge Revival series further extends its educational outreach. We hope that these publications will inspire a new generation of researchers and scholars, contributing to a deeper understanding of India’s rich maritime past and naval legacy.
