The magical verses subdue every fear.

 

In measures of poetry, and often in prose,

The practical needs of the people it shows.

A window to customs, both high and quite base,

In these primal sections, the folk-rituals trace.

Suktam 1

वाचस्पतिर्बला तेषां तन्वो अद्य दधातु मे ।

ये त्रिषप्ताः परियन्ति विश्वा रूपाणि बिभ्रतः ॥ १ ॥

May Vachaspati grant me today,

The strength their forms in truth display. [1]

पुनरेहि वचस्पते देवेन मनसा सह ।

वसोष्पते नि रमय मय्येवास्तु मयि श्रुतम् ॥ २ ॥

O lord of speech, with gods aligned,

Let sacred sound in me be enshrined. [2]

इहैवाभि वि तनूभे आर्त्नी इव ज्यया ।

वाचस्पतिर्नि यछतु मय्येवास्तु मयि श्रुतम् ॥ ३ ॥

Let Vachaspati gently bestow,

The stream of wisdom in me to flow. [3]

उपहूतो वाचस्पतिरुपास्मान् वाचस्पतिर्ह्वयताम् ।

सं श्रुतेन गमेमहि मा श्रुतेन वि राधिषि ॥ ४ ॥

With shared listening may we unite,

Let not our hearing lose its light. [4]

Suktam 2

विद्मा शरस्य पितरं पर्जन्यं भूरिधायसम् ।

विद्मो ष्वस्य मातरं पृथिवीं भूरिवर्पसम् ॥ १ ॥

We know the shaft’s celestial sire,

And Earth, its mother rich with fire. [1]

ज्याके परि णो नमाश्मानं तन्वं कृधि ।

वीडुर्वरीयोऽरातीरप द्वेषांस्या कृधि ॥ २ ॥

Around our frame thy blessing cast,

Drive foes and hatred far and fast. [2]

वृक्षं यद्गावः परिषस्वजाना अनुस्फुरं शरमर्चन्त्यृभुम् ।

शरुमस्मद्यावय दिद्युमिन्द्र ॥ ३ ॥

As cows embrace the sacred tree,

O Indra, turn the shaft from me. [3]

यथा द्यां च पृथिवीं चान्तस्तिष्ठति तेजनम् ।

एवा रोगं चास्रावं चान्तस्तिष्ठतु मुञ्ज इत् ॥ ४ ॥

As fire within the earth and sky,

Let pain and sickness inward lie. [4]

Suktam 3

विद्मा शरस्य पितरं पर्जन्यं शतवृष्ण्यम् ।

तेना ते तन्वे शं करं पृथिव्यां ते निषेचनं बहिष्टे अस्तु बालिति ॥ १ ॥

We know the shaft’s great thunderous sire,

May Earth absorb its seeding fire. [1]

विद्मा शरस्य पितरं मित्रं शतवृष्ण्यम् ।

तेना ते तन्वे शं करं पृथिव्यां ते निषेचनं बहिष्टे अस्तु बालिति ॥ २ ॥

We know the shaft’s bright friend above,

Let Earth receive its peaceful love. [2]

विद्मा शरस्य पितरं वरुणं शतवृष्ण्यम् ।

तेना ते तन्वे शं करं पृथिव्यां ते निषेचनं बहिष्टे अस्तु बालिति ॥ ३ ॥

We know the shaft’s vast ocean lord,

Let Earth its healing touch afford. [3]

विद्मा शरस्य पितरं चन्द्रं शतवृष्ण्यम् ।

तेना ते तन्वे शं करं पृथिव्यां ते निषेचनं बहिष्टे अस्तु बालिति ॥ ४ ॥

We know the shaft’s soft lunar glow,

May Earth its gentle essence know. [4]

विद्मा शरस्य पितरं सूर्यं शतवृष्ण्यम् ।

तेना ते तन्वे शं करं पृथिव्यां ते निषेचनं बहिष्टे अस्तु बालिति ॥ ५ ॥

We know the shaft’s bright solar flame,

Let Earth be blessed in healing name. [5]

यदान्त्रेषु गवीन्योर्यद्वस्तावधि संश्रितम् ।

एवा ते मूत्रं मुच्यतां बहिर्बालिति सर्वकम् ॥ ६ ॥

As waste within the entrails lies,

Let all be cast where cleansing flies. [6]

प्र ते भिनद्मि मेहनं वर्त्रं वेशन्त्या इव ।

एवा ते मूत्रं मुच्यतां बहिर्बालिति सर्वकम् ॥ ७ ॥

I pierce the knot, the binding thread,

Let all be loosed and outward led. [7]

विषितं ते वस्तिबिलं समुद्रस्योदधेरिव ।

एवा ते मूत्रं मुच्यतां बहिर्बालिति सर्वकम् ॥ ८ ॥

Your channel blocked like ocean’s tide,

Let all be freed and flow outside. [8]

यथेषुका परापतदवसृष्टाधि धन्वनः ।

एवा ते मूत्रं मुच्यतां बहिर्बालिति सर्वकम् ॥ ९ ॥

As arrows fall released and wide,

Let all be cast and not abide. [9]

Suktam 4

अम्बयो यन्त्यध्वभिर्जामयो अध्वरीयताम् ।

पृञ्चतीर्मधुना पयः ॥ १ ॥

Let maidens come with sacred pace,

And fill the rites with honeyed grace. [1]

अमूर्या उप सूर्ये याभिर्वा सूर्यः सह ।

ता नो हिन्वन्त्वध्वरम् ॥ २ ॥

Those rays with whom the sun ascends,

May they inspire our sacred ends. [2]

अपो देवीरुप ह्वये यत्र गावः पिबन्ति नः ।

सिन्धुभ्यः कर्त्वं हविः ॥ ३ ॥

I call the waters, goddesses bright,

Where cattle drink with pure delight. [3]

अप्स्वन्तरमृतमप्सु भेषजम् ।

अपामुत प्रशस्तिभिरश्वा भवथ वाजिनो गावो भवथ वाजिनीः ॥ ४ ॥

In waters lies the balm divine,

Let steeds and kine with strength align. [4]

Suktam 5

आपो हि ष्ठा मयोभुवस्ता न ऊर्जे दधातन ।

महे रणाय चक्षसे ॥ १ ॥

O Waters, bring us strength and grace,

For mighty vision in this place. [1]

यो वः शिवतमो रसस्तस्य भाजयतेह नः ।

उशतीरिव मातरः ॥ २ ॥

Bestow on us your sweetest flow,

Like mothers nurturing below. [2]

तस्मा अरं गमाम वो यस्य क्षयाय जिन्वथ ।

आपो जनयथा च नः ॥ ३ ॥

To him who grants enduring gain,

O Waters, birth in us sustain. [3]

ईशाना वार्याणां क्षयन्तीश्चर्षणीनाम् ।

अपो याचामि भेषजम् ॥ ४ ॥

O rulers of the gifts divine,

I seek your healing, pure and fine. [4]

Suktam 6

शं नो देवीरभिष्टय आपो भवन्तु पीतये ।

शं योरभि स्रवन्तु नः ॥ १ ॥

May sacred Waters bless our way,

And stream through us in peace today. [1]

अप्सु मे सोमो अब्रवीदन्तर्विश्वानि भेषजा ।

अग्निं च विश्वशम्भुवम् ॥ २ ॥

In Waters Soma’s voice was heard,

With healing gifts and Agni’s word. [2]

आपः पृणीत भेषजं वरूथं तन्वे मम ।

ज्योक्च सूर्यं दृशे ॥ ३ ॥

O Waters, fill my form with shield,

That I may see the sun revealed. [3]

शं न आपो धन्वन्याः शमु सन्त्वनूप्याः ।

शं नः खनित्रिमा आपः शमु याः कुम्भ आभृताः ।

शिवा नः सन्तु वार्षिकीः ॥ ४ ॥

Peace from desert, marsh, and well,

From pots and rains where Waters dwell. [4]

Suktam 7

स्तुवानमग्न आ वह यातुधानं किमीदिनम् ।

त्वं हि देव वन्दितो हन्ता दस्योर्बभूविथ ॥ १ ॥
