Suktam 1

अन्तकाय मृत्यवे नमः प्राना अपाना इह ते रमन्ताम् ।

इहायमस्तु पुरुषः सहासुना सूर्यस्य भागे अमृतस्य लोके ॥ १ ॥

To Death we bow, let breath remain,

This soul abide in heaven’s domain. [1]

उदेनं भगो अग्रभीदुदेनं सोमो अंशुमान् ।

उदेनं मरुतो देवा उदिन्द्राग्नी स्वस्तये ॥ २ ॥

Bhaga, Soma, Maruts rise,

Indra-Agni bless our skies. [2]

इह तेऽसुरिह प्राण इहायुरिह ते मनः ।

उत्त्वा निरृत्याः पाशेभ्यो दैव्या वचा भरामसि ॥ ३ ॥          

Here is your breath, your life, your mind,

From bonds of death, release we find. [3]

उत्क्रामातः पुरुष माव पत्था मृत्योः पड्वीषमवमुञ्चमानः ।

मा छित्था अस्माल्लोकादग्नेः सूर्यस्य सन्दृशः ॥ ४ ॥

Rise up, O soul, from death’s dark way,

Do not forsake the light of day. [4]

तुभ्यं वातः पवतां मातरिश्वा तुभ्यं वर्षन्त्वमृतान्यापः ।

सूर्यस्ते तन्वे शं तपाति त्वां मृत्युर्दयतां मा प्र मेष्ठाः ॥ ५ ॥

Let winds and waters blessings send,

May death be kind, and life extend. [5]

उद्यानं ते पुरुष नावयानं जीवातुं ते दक्षतातिं कृनोमि ।

आ हि रोहेमममृतं सुखं रथमथ जिर्विर्विदथमा वदासि ॥ ६ ॥

We build for you a chariot bright,

Ascend with joy and speak with light. [6]

मा ते मनस्तत्र गान् मा तिरो भून् मा जीवेभ्यः प्र मदो मानु गाः पितॄन् ।

विश्वे देवा अभि रक्षन्तु त्वेह ॥ ७ ॥

Let not your mind in darkness stray,

May all the gods protect your way. [7]

मा गतानामा दीधीथा ये नयन्ति परावतम् ।

आ रोह तमसो ज्योतिरेह्या ते हस्तौ रभामहे ॥ ८ ॥

Avoid the path that leads to night,

Come grasp our hands and seek the light. [8]

श्यामश्च त्वा मा शबलश्च प्रेषितौ यमस्य यौ पथिरक्षी श्वानौ ।

अर्वाङेहि मा वि दीध्यो मात्र तिष्ठः पराङ्मनाः ॥ ९ ॥

Come back, avoid the dogs of death,

Stay near, not lost in shadowed breath. [9]

मैतं पन्थामनु गा भीम एष येन पूर्वं नेयथ तं ब्रवीमि ।

तम एतत्पुरुष मा प्र पत्था भयं परस्तादभयं ते अर्वाक् ॥ १० ॥

Do not go the dreadful way,

Come where peace and safety stay. [10]

रक्षन्तु त्वाग्नयो ये अप्स्वन्ता रक्षतु त्वा मनुष्या यमिन्धते ।

वैश्वानरो रक्षतु जातवेदा दिव्यस्त्वा मा प्र धाग्विद्युता सह ॥ ११ ॥

Let Agni guard you from the deep,

And heavenly fire your soul keep. [11]

मा त्वा क्रव्यादभि मंस्तारात्सङ्कसुकाच्चर रक्षतु त्वा द्यौ रक्षतु ।

पृथिवी सूर्यश्च त्वा रक्षतां चन्द्रमाश्च ।

अन्तरिक्षं रक्षतु देवहेत्याः ॥ १२ ॥

Let sky and sun and moon defend,

And space protect you to the end. [12]

बोधश्च त्वा प्रतिबोधश्च रक्षतामस्वप्नश्च त्वानवद्राणश्च रक्षताम् ।

गोपायंश्च त्वा जागृविश्च रक्षताम् ॥ १३ ॥

Let wakefulness and watchful care,

Guard you always everywhere. [13]

ते त्वा रक्षन्तु ते त्वा गोपायन्तु तेभ्यो नमस्तेभ्यः स्वाहा ॥ १४ ॥

Let guardians shield you day and night,

To them we bow in sacred rite. [14]

जीवेभ्यस्त्वा समुदे वायुरिन्द्रो धाता दधातु सविता त्रायमाणः ।

मा त्वा प्राणो बलं हासीदसुं तेऽनु ह्वयामसि ॥ १५ ॥

Let Indra, Vayu, Savitar save,

And breath return from death’s dark cave. [15]

मा त्वा जम्भः संहनुर्मा तमो विदन् मा जिह्वा बर्हिस्प्रमयुः कथा स्याः ।

उत्त्वादित्या वसवो भरन्तूदिन्द्राग्नी स्वस्तये ॥ १६ ॥

Let speech and strength remain with grace,

May Indra-Agni bless your place. [16]

उत्त्वा द्यौरुत्पृथिव्युत्प्रजापतिरग्रभीत् ।

उत्त्वा मृत्योरोषधयः सोमराज्ञीरपीपरन् ॥ १७ ॥

Sky, earth, and herbs have held you fast,

Let Soma’s queens restore you last. [17]

अयं देवा इहैवास्त्वयं मामुत्र गादितः ।

इमं सहस्रवीर्येण मृत्योरुत्पारयामसि ॥ १८ ॥

Let gods remain with you right here,

We lift you from death’s grip severe. [18]

उत्त्वा मृत्योरपीपरं सं धमन्तु वयोधसः ।

मा त्वा व्यस्तकेश्यो मा त्वाघरुदो रुदन् ॥ १९ ॥

Let elders breathe and strength arise,

No tears, no cries, no mournful eyes. [19]

आहार्षमविदं त्वा पुनरागाः पुनर्णवः ।

सर्वाङ्ग सर्वं ते चक्षुः सर्वमायुश्च तेऽविदम् ॥ २० ॥

You’ve returned, renewed and whole,

With sight and life and radiant soul. [20]

व्यवात्ते ज्योतिरभूदप त्वत्तमो अक्रमीत् ।

अप त्वन् मृत्युं निरृतिमप यक्ष्मं नि दध्मसि ॥ २१ ॥

The light has come, the dark has fled,

We cast off death and dread instead. [21]

Suktam 2

आ रभस्वेमाममृतस्य श्नुष्टिमछिद्यमाना जरदष्टिरस्तु ते ।

असुं त आयुः पुनरा भरामि रजस्तमो मोप गा मा प्र मेष्ठाः ॥ १ ॥

Take hold of life, let age be mild,

Return to breath, O death-exiled. [1]
