This title incorporates an outline of the structure of government in Scotland after the Treaty of Union with an in-depth study of the politics and administration of Scotland from 1747 to 1784.
It concentrates on the role of the third Duke of Argyll as a Scottish 'manager' after the 1745 rebellion, arguing that in many ways he acted as a guardian of Scottish interests rather than a manager of Scottish politics for English politicians. The concluding chapters examine the reasons for the lack of a sucessor to Argyll until the emergence of Henry Dundas in 1784, and the political changes in Scotland which made the emergence of Dundas possible. The author has drawn upon a wide range of original sources, which are documented in the extensive bibliography. Appendices also detail the government offices in Scotland and the Scottish civil list.
