This volume centers on the Biblical statement ‘God is love’, exploring what this means in the context of the Old and New Testaments, and in the systematic-theological discussions on the doctrine of God, ontology, and eschatology. The Biblical imagery of God’s passionate love leads to fresh understandings in systematic theology, and the debate on the nature of God’s love is continued by new insights. The authors have longstanding experience in Biblical and theological research as members of the research group Biblical Exegesis and Systematic Theology.

Arnold Huijgen, Ph.D. (2011), Theological University Apeldoorn, is Professor of Systematic Theology at the Protestant Theological University in Utrecht. He specializes in Reformed theology, hermeneutics, and the doctrine of the Trinity. He has written books on hermeneutics and on the person of Mary. Arjan van den Os, Ph.D. (2023), Theological University Apeldoorn, is Associate Professor of New Testament at that university. He has written his dissertation on the concept of God’s vengeance in the New Testament. His research concentrates on the image of God in the New Testament and the theological interpretation of the New Testament. Eric Peels, Ph.D. (1992), Theological University Apeldoorn, is Emeritus Professor of Old Testament Studies at that university and Research Associate of the Department of Biblical Studies of the University of the Free State in South Africa. He has published books and articles on the Old Testament image of God, and the exegesis and theology of Jeremiah. Dolf te Velde, Ph.D. (2010), Theological University Kampen, was Associate Professor of Systematic Theology at that university, and Associate Professor of Historical Theology at the Evangelical Theological Faculty Leuven. He is the author of several articles on Reformed scholasticism and on the doctrines of God and of predestination, and co-editor of volume 1 of Synopsis of a Purer Theology (Brill, 2014).
