"e;Modern Day Spiritual Warfare: The Invisible War Against Evil"e; describes some of the strategies and tools that can help guide you to spiritual freedom. It provides information on the tactics and weapons used in unseen spiritual battles that every human faces as they move towards their destiny. God has a plan for your life, but so does the devil. Both are seeking your spirit and soul, but while God is seeking to give you eternal and abundant life, Satan seeks to destroy and enslave you. One of the greatest failures of the church today is the poor instruction and preparation of spiritual warriors to battle against evil. We are in a state of war, have been, and always will be, until we pass from this world into the next. In spiritual warfare, no quarter will be given to us, and we are to give no quarter to the enemy. It is a battle with no retreat. God has already won the war, but the devil refuses to surrender. More than ever, we need men and women with the knowledge and courage to battle evil and defend spiritual liberty!"e;Modern Day Spiritual Warfare: The Invisible War Against Evil"e; is written for both Christian and secular society. It covers the general aspects of engaging in spiritual battle with evil and demonic spirits. Geared towards helping people who are struggling with sin, addiction, or an evil presence in their lives while providing real-life examples. Additionally, examples of prayers that can be used to exorcise demons, promote inner healing, or free yourself from spiritual bondage are provided.

Chapter 1:
The Spiritual Realm

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.(Genesis 1:27)

To better understand the physical realm, we must return to the book of Genesis in Holy Scripture to examine how our world was formed. “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:1-2)

God first created light, then divided the light from the darkness, and created the firmament (i.e., Heaven), which separated the waters from the waters, in a vertical division of waters (waters above and below Heaven). A horizontal division of the waters occurred next, resulting in the separation of dry land from the seas. After this, God created the plants and trees, and the sun, moon, and stars (see Genesis 1:3-19).

Continuing in Genesis 1:20-31, God created the birds and fowl, as well as the fish and creatures of the seas, followed by the animals and beasts of the earth. Man and woman were then created, and finally, God rested from His work. Genesis 2:7 records, “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed life into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

Humans are composed of a body, soul, and spirit. This triune composition of humanity is unique among all of nature. The soul encompasses our life, mind, emotions, personality, and will, while the spirit represents the innermost part of us that connects with the spiritual world. Our spirit serves as the primary link between the physical realm and the spiritual dimension. As humans, we often focus solely on the physical realm and the things we can see, touch, hear, smell, and taste (i.e., our physical body). While we recognize that every human being has their own personality, we frequently overlook the totality of soul and spirit. Howard O. Pittman, in his book, Demons, An Eyewitness Account2, stated that God has three immutable characteristics: 1) God is a spirit, 2) God is invisible, and 3) God is immortal.

Humans are created in God’s image, including the immortality of our soul and spirit. The primary distinction between humans and God is our physical body, at least until the birth of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:23)

We tend to focus more on the physical realm than the spiritual one because we can see and touch it; however, it comprises only thirty-three percent of our total makeup and is fleeting. The greater part (sixty-seven percent) of our composition—soul and spirit—is not visible to the eye, but it lasts forever. Therefore, it is wise to devote our time and energy to the eternal, not the temporary.

Have you ever wondered how Jesus Christ could love everyone the way He did? How He didn’t judge people based on appearance, wealth, intelligence, or past mistakes? Jesus saw each person’s eternal spirit and soul and understood their true worth. In Luke 15:10, Jesus says there is “joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.” You are more valuable than you think. All of heaven celebrates even when only one person repents!

Therefore, we should also consider the worth of a person’s spirit rather than their outward appearance, personal failures, or accomplishments. Our physical bodies are temporary. The simple truth is that every human spirit holds the same immense value to God. God’s love for each of us is total and unwavering! In contrast, all humans are despised and hated by the devil.

Our outward appearance—our body and movements—holds no eternal value.

So why does the physical realm matter in spiritual warfare? The physical realm has a direct influence on our spiritual well-being through our actions, inactions, and decisions. Ecclesiastes 9:10 states that, “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.”

When God pronounces His righteous judgment on your life, you will not be able to change your reward. This truth is explained in a lecture about the afterlife that Jesus gave to the religious leaders of His time.

And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus (the beggar) in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou are tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. (Luke 16:22-26)

The physical and spiritual realms are interconnected and equally important for our spiritual well-being. It is clear that our physical actions, or lack thereof, have a significant impact on the unseen spirit world.

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.” (2 Corinthians 5:10)

The battles fought in the spiritual realm can have a profound impact on our lives. Conflicts between countries, states, groups, and individuals frequently arise from spiritual struggles between the unseen forces of good and evil. On a smaller scale, spiritual attacks on individual and personal relationships are common and often not discernible by those affected.

A good example of how both the physical and spiritual realms interact is prayer. Verbally expressing a prayer involves a physical act, but it also requires faith to be effective, which is invisible. The results of prayer are observable if one can discern them (comfort, healing, protection, etc.). However, the actions behind our prayers are carried out by unseen spiritual forces.

In biblical times, just as today, demonic activity and spiritual affliction were quite common. The Holy Bible is filled with examples of the demonic trying to alter God’s plan. For instance, in Genesis chapter 3, this point is illustrated when the serpent convinces Eve to disobey God through deception and lies. However, it is in the book of Job (pronounced Jobe) where we gain much greater insight into how the spiritual dimension influences the physical realm.

Satan’s hatred for all humans is absolute! Even if you worship the devil, you remain insufferable to him!

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for naught? Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD. (Job 1:6-12)

It should be noted that Satan doesn’t ask to attack Job directly; instead, he asks God to afflict Job. Of course, God refuses to harm Job, but He allows the devil to test Job’s integrity. The text describes how Satan afflicted Job by taking away all his material wealth and how Satan used a strong wind to kill Job’s children (see Job 1:13-19). In Job chapter 2, Satan reappears before God and requests permission to afflict Job’s health. This request is also granted.

Satan then turns Job’s wife against him. “Then his wife said unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God and die.” (Job 2:9) It seems that Satan was using Job’s wife to apply additional pressure on him in an attempt to compromise and undermine him. If you look closely at Job 1:11 again, you will see Job’s wife using similar terminology to what Satan used when he spoke to God. Could it be that Satan possessed Job’s wife in a secondary attack to get Job to curse God? Job resisted his wife’s rebuke and remained strong in his faith. He even replied that she was being “foolish” (see Job 2:9-10).

This key concept in spiritual warfare must not be overlooked. It is one thing to face spiritual battles with the support of your spouse. However, consider that, as a strategy, Satan intentionally isolated Job from those he...
