Chapter One

So You Want an Encounter with God?

Understanding the Desire for Divine Encounters

For many new believers, the journey of faith begins with a deep, often unspoken, yearning to experience God in a tangible way. This desire for a divine encounter—a moment where the presence of God feels real and personal—can be a powerful motivator in your spiritual journey. But what exactly does it mean to have an encounter with God, and how can you prepare yourself for such an experience?

In the Bible, we find numerous accounts of people who had extraordinary encounters with God. Moses spoke with God face to face as a man speaks with his friend (Exodus 33:11). Elijah heard God in a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:12). Apostle Paul also during his life had a life-changing encounter on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:3-6). These stories are more than just historical events; they are invitations for you to experience a similar closeness with your Creator.

Why Seek Divine Encounters?

Seeking divine encounters is more than just having a spiritual experience. It also involves fostering a relationship that transforms every aspect of your life with Christ. These encounters can:

1. Deepen your faith: It enables you to experience God in a tangible way and strengthens your belief in His power and presence.

2. Provide guidance: In moments of confusion or decision-making, divine encounters can offer clear direction.

3. Bring comfort: Feeling God's presence in times of distress brings peace that surpasses all understanding.

4. Empower you for service: Encounters with God equip you to serve others with renewed vigor and compassion.

Setting Your Expectations

As a new believer, it is essential to approach this journey with the right mindset. Divine encounters are not about seeking sensational experiences for their own sake. Instead, they entail a continuous desire to know God more intimately and align your life with His will. This pursuit requires patience, dedication, and a heart fully surrendered to God.

Preparing Your Heart and Mind

Before you can experience a divine encounter, it's important to prepare both your heart and mind. Here are some steps to help you get started:

  1. Cultivate a Hunger for God: Develop a genuine desire to know God more deeply. This can be done through regular Bible study, worship, and prayer.
  2. To be right with God and receive forgiveness, you must first forgive others. True forgiveness involves praying for blessings over them, no matter what the past situation is.
  3. Confess and Repent: Clear any barriers between you and God by confessing your sins and seeking His forgiveness.
  4. Seek Solitude: Find a quiet place where you can regularly spend time with God without distractions.
  5. Be Open and Expectant: Approach your times with God with an open heart and a mind ready to receive whatever He wants to reveal to you.

This book will provide you with practical steps to position yourself for divine encounters and deepen your relationship with Christ. Each chapter will explore different aspects of this journey, from understanding watch hours and angelic activities to developing spiritual disciplines and intercessory prayer.

By the end of this book, you will have a comprehensive understanding of how to create an environment conducive to divine encounters and how to maintain a vibrant and ongoing relationship with Christ.

The Biblical Foundation of Encounters

As you embark on this journey to experience divine encounters, it is essential to ground your understanding in the Bible. The scriptures provide numerous examples and teachings that highlight how God interacts with His people. By studying these examples, you too, can gain insights into how you can prepare for and recognize your own encounters with God.

Biblical Examples of Divine Encounters

1. Moses and the Burning Bush (Exodus 3:1-6):

Moses, tending the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, led the sheep to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Though the bush was on fire, it did not burn up. Curious, Moses approached, and God called out to him from within the bush, "Moses! Moses!" Moses replied, "Here I am."

God instructed Moses to remove his sandals, for the place where he was standing was holy ground. This encounter marked the beginning of Moses' mission to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. It demonstrated God's ability to reveal Himself in extraordinary ways and highlighted Moses' calling to be a leader and prophet.

2. Jacob's Ladder (Genesis 28:10-17):

Jacob, fleeing from his brother Esau, stopped for the night at a place called Luz. As he slept, he had a dream in which he saw a ladder resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven and the angels of God ascending and descending on it. Above it stood the Lord, who declared Himself as the God of Abraham and Isaac and reiterated the promises He made to them.

God assured Jacob of His presence, protection, and future blessings on his descendants. When Jacob awoke, he was filled with awe and declared, "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it." He renamed the place Bethel, meaning "House of God." This encounter reaffirmed God's covenant with Jacob and his descendants, providing him with divine assurance and a sense of purpose despite his uncertain circumstances.

3. Samuel's Call (1 Samuel 3:1-10):

Young Samuel was ministering before the Lord under Eli. In those days, the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions. One night, as Samuel lay down in the house of the Lord where the ark of God was, the Lord called out to him. Samuel, thinking it was Eli, ran to him and said, "Here I am; you called me." Eli told him to go back to bed. This happened three times before Eli realized it was the Lord calling the boy. He instructed Samuel that when God calls him next, he should say, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening." When the Lord called again, Samuel responded as Eli had instructed. God then revealed His plans for Eli's household and the future of Israel. This encounter marked the beginning of Samuel's prophetic ministry, emphasizing the importance of being attentive and responsive to God's voice.

4. Isaiah's Vision (Isaiah 6:1-8):

In the year that King Uzziah died, Isaiah had a vision of the Lord sitting on a throne, high and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple. Above Him were seraphim, each with six wings. They called out to one another, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory." The sound of their voices shook the doorposts and thresholds, and the temple was filled with smoke. Overwhelmed by his sinfulness and the holiness of God, Isaiah cried out, "Woe to me! I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty."

One of the seraphim flew to him with a live coal from the altar and touched his mouth, saying, "See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for." Then, Isaiah heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" Isaiah responded, "Here am I. Send me!" This vision not only cleansed Isaiah but also commissioned him to be a prophet to the nations. It strongly highlighted the transformative power of divine encounters.

Common Themes in Biblical Encounters

1. God's Initiative: In each case, God takes the initiative to reveal Himself. These encounters are often unexpected and come at pivotal moments in the individuals' lives. Additionally, these men were postured and ready to receive an encounter based on their lifestyle of faith and service or significant life events.

2. Response of Faith: Those who experience divine encounters respond with faith and obedience. Whether it's Moses turning aside to see the burning bush or Isaiah saying, "Here am I, send me," their responses reflect a willingness to follow God's lead.

3. Transformation: Divine encounters often lead to significant transformation. Jacob becomes Israel, Samuel becomes a prophet, and Saul becomes Paul. These transformations highlight the power of encountering God.

4. Mission and Purpose: Each encounter often comes with a specific mission or purpose. When God calls individuals to a task, He provides guidance or gives a prophetic message.

How Do You Apply These Lessons To Your Life?

As a new believer seeking to encounter God, it is important to be open to His initiative and ready to respond with faith. Here are some practical steps to apply these lessons to your own journey:

1. Be Watchful: Stay attentive to how God might reveal Himself to you. This could be through prayer, scripture, dreams, or even through other people.

2. Be Obedient: When you sense God speaking to you, respond with obedience. Take the steps He is guiding you to take, even if they seem daunting or unclear.

3. Be Prepared for Transformation: Expect that encountering God will change you. Be open to the transformation He wants to bring into your life.

4. Seek Your Mission: Ask God to reveal His purpose for you. Divine encounters often come with a call to action or a specific mission. Be ready to embrace it.
