Volume 39 contains five colloquia from the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy during 2023 and 2024. Sources: Plato’s Phaedo, Protagoras, and Symposium; Aristotle’s De Anima, Metaphysics, and Nicomachean Ethics; Iamblichus’s De Mysteriis. Topics: immortality, Socrates, eros, subjectivity, daemonology.
The 39th volume of published proceedings of the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy contains five papers and commentaries presented during academic year 2023–24. Topics: Aristotle’s reversal of the argument between Cebes and Socrates in Plato’s Phaedo on the immortality of the human soul; the argument and action of Plato’s Protagoras and the emergence of Socrates as philosopher; Socrates’ education from Diotima in Plato’s Symposium; the apparent absence in Aristotle of the modern understanding of the human subject; a new interpretation of the material influences on daemons according to Iamblichus. The commentators subject each paper to critical review, and they support, challenge, or reject what they find.
