Annotated edition of the Latin text of Erasmus' Paraphrases on Matthew and Mark, preceded by an introduction and the history of these two texts.
Erasmus’s project to paraphrase the New Testament was the culmination of a long philological endeavour aimed at restoring Christianity not only to its original Greek text but also to a revised and corrected Latin translation, enriched with highly erudite annotations. Published between 1517 and 1524, The Paraphrases crown this intellectual edifice by offering an explanatory reformulation of the sacred text. By paraphrasing the Gospels, Erasmus sought to restore direct access to the words of Christ and his disciples, enabling everyone to read and understand them.
Le projet d’Érasme de paraphraser le Nouveau Testament fut l’aboutissement d’une longue entreprise philologique visant à restituer au christianisme non seulement son texte grec original, mais aussi une traduction latine révisée et corrigée, enrichie de notes érudites. Publiées entre 1517 et 1524, les Paraphrases couronnent cet édifice intellectuel en offrant une reformulation explicative du texte sacré. En paraphrasant les Évangiles, Érasme cherchait à redonner un accès direct aux paroles du Christ et de ses disciples, permettant ainsi à chacun de les lire et de les comprendre.
Ce volume propose une édition annotée de la Paraphrase sur Matthieu—le premier Évangile paraphrasé par Érasme—et de celle sur Marc, où, désormais pleinement maître de son sujet, l’humaniste donne toute la mesure de son art.

Jean-François Cottier est Professeur de langue et littérature latines à l’Université Paris Cité et membre senior de l’Institut universitaire de France. Il travaille sur les auteurs latins du Moyen Âge et de la Renaissance et en particulier sur la rhétorique des écrits spirituels. Jean-François Cottier is Professor of Latin at the Université Paris Cité and a senior member of the Institut universitaire de France. He works on Latin authors of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and in particular on the rhetoric of spiritual writings.
