Materiality of Roman religion remains among the most striking and evocative features of our museums, archaeological parks, and ancient urban landscapes. This volume presents a selection of sanctuaries from the Danubian provinces, recently investigated and interpreted through cutting-edge field archaeological methodologies and approaches of religious studies. Following a methodological introduction, three main chapters offer in-depth analyses by leading archaeologists and scholars of religion in Central and Eastern Europe. These studies explore the continuity of pre-Roman religious traditions, the role of epigraphic and figurative sources in space sacralisation, and the impact of urban religion on religious communication in sacralised spaces.

Csaba Szabó, PhD, University of Szeged, is Assistant Professor of Religious Studies. He has published several monographs—most recently, Roman Religion in the Danubian provinces (Oxbow, Oxford, 2022), as well as numerous articles and essays on the cult of Mithras and history of archaeology. Christian Gugl, PhD, Austrian Archaeological Institute, is the Deputy Head of the Department of Historical Archaeology. His work focuses especially on the archaeology and prospection of the Roman settlement of Carnuntum, Troesmis and Virunum.
