This study explores Haïdra’s rich history—from antiquity to today—through archival research and architectural archaeology. Situated on Tunisia’s western border, Haïdra reveals layers of regional, social, and structural history, culminating in a detailed analysis and restoration of its built heritage.
D'Ammaedara à Haïdra takes readers on a journey through the different periods of Tunisian history, from antiquity to the present day, via the medieval and modern periods. Haïdra, a small town located on the western border between Tunisia and Algeria, is the setting for this exploration. This study is an experiment linking history and architectural archaeology, with the aim of highlighting fragments of history, events, figures and the little-known heritage of this town and its region.

Based on archival documents, various sources and existing studies, the book addresses issues related to the occupation of the site from Antiquity to modern times, taking into account the regional, tribal, socio-economic and security context, with particular attention paid to the ancient site. After extensive fieldwork, an archaeological and architectural analysis was carried out using various methods of building archaeology, focusing on construction techniques and materials, and culminating in an attempt at restoration. These two approaches, historical and architectural, have contributed to a comprehensive understanding of Haïdra and its occupation over time.

Ahmed Sayadi holds a PhD in archaeology, history and heritage, and is a senior lecturer at the Faculté des Lettres et des Sciences Humaines de Kairouan (Université de Kairouan) and a member of the Laboratoire Économie, Territoire et Paysages Patrimoniaux (INP, Tunisia). His research focuses primarily on the regions of Kef and Kasserine, through a cross-disciplinary study of architecture, history and territory. Since 2012, he has been participating in a Tunisian-Spanish scientific cooperation project with the Complutense University of Madrid.
