This commentary offers a deep dive into the first century city of Roman Corinth, insight from patristic commentaries on 1 Corinthians, and a focus on Paul’s call for unity in the church. Its thesis is that Paul counters the Corinthians’ prioritization of knowledge by calling them to focus on the message of the crucified and risen Christ while embodying the virtue of love to animate and unify the church. Mark Reasoner, Ph.D. (1990, University of Chicago), is Professor of Theology at Marian University in Indianapolis. He also authored The Strong and the Weak (1999), Romans in Full Circle (2005), Now Shown Mercy: A Commentary on Romans 9–11 (Cascade Books, 2024), and Five Models of Scripture (Eerdmans, 2021).
