This book explores video annotation as a reflective, analytic, organisational, and publishing tool for performance scholarship. On the understanding that we differentiate ourselves through the adoption of technology, annotation is introduced as a manual practice of seeing and decision-making that not only enriches or supplements time-based media but develops the analytic capacity and deep attention of human (rather than computational) subjects. Rebecca Stancliffe is a postdoctoral research fellow at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, UK, where her research activity focuses on arts and health and digital technology. Rebecca is the co-editor of Digital Annotation and the Understanding of Bodily Practices (2021), a special issue of International Journal of Performance Arts and Digital Media. Her article in the special issue, Differentiating (an)notation practices: A practitioner s observations, examines the differences between notation and annotation as understood by extensive experience of both practices. Rebecca s article Training the analytical dance eye: Video Annotation for Dance (2019) published in Theatre, Dance and Performance Training articulates the value of working with annotation for improved critical engagement with videoed dance. Rebecca teaches about video annotation as methodology for students on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and integrates video annotation into her teaching on dance history.
