Ministry Gifts
In Ephesians 4:11-12, we see that some believers are ministers to the whole body of Christ. Of these, some are called to be Apostles, some Prophets, some Evangelists, and some Pastors and Teachers. These are called the Ministerial Gifts of the Spirit.
Why are the Ministry Gifts given to the Church?
The ministerial gifts are given to the church to prepare the believers to do the work of ministry for which God in Ephesians 4:12 has called them.
According to that Scripture, who has been called to do the work of ministry?
The nature of the ministerial gifts is revelatory and authoritative. Revelation is a matter of knowing what God knows (Genesis 18:17; John 15:15).
Authority is Divine order, doing things the way God does them.
The concept of the five-fold ministry is based on Ephesians 4:11-12 which reads, “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.”
The five-fold ministry has usually been defined as the church leadership ministry that consists of: (1) Apostles, (2) Prophets, (3) Evangelists, (4) Pastors (Shepherds), and (5) Teachers.
The leadership gifts are given to bring the saints to maturity so that they (the saints) can do the work of the ministry, resulting in the edification (or building up) of the body of Christ. This process is designated as discipleship.
Each of the five gifts uniquely serves the Church.
Every spiritual gift has two parts:
The anointing of a gift is the inward divine transfusion wrapped up in desire and inclination to operate in that gift. The skills of a gift are the things we must learn, practice, and perfect outwardly to operate successfully in that gift.
Many who struggle in their ministries have the skill or knowledge but need more anointing power. Some have the anointing power but are void in skills needed to successfully operate in their gifts.
If we fail to develop our prophetic skills or fail to cultivate a sacred atmosphere conducive to habitation, we will frustrate the Holy Spirit and those we are sent to minister to.
The breaking of the vessel is a basic foundational experience that every servant of the Lord must go through. God must break your soul before you can effectively serve Him.
You will face two possibilities in working for the Lord.
Your soul has not yet yielded to the spirit fully, and therefore your spirit has not awakened. The Holy Spirit in you is suppressed and cannot be released through you. Therefore, there is no emanation. When your soul is clearly unpaired from the inside, your spirit will be wrapped up with counter-influences from your mind, will, or emotions. The result is a mixture and impurities. This will produce a mixed discharge. The soul will frustrate your service if your emanation is not comprehensively divine. It is the Spirit that gives life.
2 Corinthians 3:6 “Who also hath made us able ministers of the New Testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.”
A prophet must be brought to the end of himself or herself. He or she must realize the vanity of feelings and carnality. They will have to admit sooner or later that only the spirit can give life. Even our best thoughts and feelings cannot give life.
It is a matter of transmission of spirit life from our spirit, resulting in others encountering this life through us.
1 Corinthians 6:17: “But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.”
If others can touch our spirit, they’re touching God’s Spirit at the same time.
Our Spirit transports God’s spirit to men. When God’s Spirit moves, he must move through the human spirit. This is like electricity; it travels through electrical wires. Your spirit is the wire that bears the current of God. God’s Spirit needs the human spirit as a medium to bear His Spirit; through the human spirit, the holy spirit is conveyed and carried to man.
What Does the Fivefold Ministry Do?
Ephesians 4:11-16
The Fivefold Ministry should do the following things:
Ephesians 2:20: having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone.
The Prophets and Apostles are gifted to bring revealed knowledge to the church. This revelation is not carnal. What I mean by bringing revealed knowledge to the church is that through the prophets and apostles, God shines his light on the scriptures or illuminates the scriptures in a way not seen before.
The Prophet under the New Testament is more of a corroborative ministry than sovereign.
Apostolic Preaching and Teaching
Apostolic preaching/teaching is characterized by its foundational and authoritative anointing. Apostles lay foundations (1 Corinthians 3:10). The foundations are the basics of the Christian faith. By basics, we do not mean that they are less momentous. All other truths must be built upon these basic foundational teachings.
Apostles are also “planters” (1 Corinthians 3:6). A planter starts a new work usually in an unplanted field. Apostles may be church planters, missionaries, or pioneers. A pioneer is the first person to do something.
1 Corinthians 3:10: According to the grace of God, which is given unto me, as a wise Master Builder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
Apostles begin new work. They lay a “kingdom” foundation in the churches or ministries they are starting. The rest of the building cannot be adequately erected without these foundations. Therefore, the apostolic preacher/teacher must be equipped with a clear understanding of the kingdom of God and its guiding principles.
Apostolic preaching and teaching operate with the highest level of spiritual authority (Matthew 7:28-29).
Paul rebukes the Galatians for leaving the foundational truths he had taught them. This is an excellent example of apostolic correction. The epistles to the Corinthians are also good examples of apostolic authority and admonition.
Prophetic Preaching and Teaching
Prophetic ministry is the revelation of God’s will. The prophet makes known the will of God in a timely and enthusiastic manner. To move in the prophetic is to uncover what is covered in the Word.
Prophetic preaching is the call to do God’s will. This may come through a plea for personal and corporate holiness, or to God’s specific revelation, plan, or strategy. The prophetic ministry of the Word establishes God’s intentions, standards and issues a call to those intentions and standards.
Prophetic messages and ministry are for the local church and the entire body of Christ. The most significant error of prophets is the assumption that prophets must be discordant and disparaging in their administration. While this disposition is habitual among prophets or prophetic people, it doesn’t legitimize the crudity. Don’t justify the flesh; crucify it instead.
Evangelistic Preaching and Teaching
The evangelistic ministry is chiefly concerned with winning people to Christ. The skillful evangelist has a powerful anointing to convince people they need to be saved and gets excellent results.
Paul told Timothy that he must do the work of an evangelist (2 Timothy 4:5).
All ministers must develop evangelistic skills and be prepared to communicate the gospel culturally appropriately.
1 Peter 3:15: But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
Every message should contain the basics of the gospel. (1) The depravity of man. (2) Christ died for our sins. (3) He was buried, and He rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures. (4) He is returning to establish his millennial kingdom and rule as the King of kings and the Lord of Lords and those who overcome the world, the devil and flesh as he overcame will rule and reign with him (Revelation 3:21).
Evangelistic preaching does two things: it presents the gospel of the kingdom to the lost calling them into justification through Jesus Christ. This ministry will impart to God’s people a passion for the...
