Introduction
The Royal Son of the Living God
I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me,
Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
Psalms 2:7
Invited! The King has summoned you. The KING of the Universe, Creator and Maker of all things, the Most High God. His splendorous scepter is extended to you! Oh, the excitement and grandeur of a privilege! Immense expectations and awe-inspiring emotions should overwhelm the thoughts, leading to contemplation about what could happen. Upon your breathtaking entrance, you hear these words:
“I will declare the decree.”
The words of the King, the voice of all authority, declared an official order: “You are my Son.” As you read, remember the concept of this royal proclamation; experience the grandeur of God’s presence as KING, addressing His only begotten Son, "King Jesus, the Christ," the Prince of Peace.
Pause!
There is an entry requirement.
It should be unmistakably clear that God, the KING, is a good Father who watches over His Son keenly. The security measures are intense, with a host of angels on guard, ready for anything; the fortification is out of this world. Therefore, enter the palace with caution; He sees and knows everything!
Ecclesiastes 5:1
Guard your steps and approach with caution and reverence.
“God is Holy”
Have you ever been in the middle of a conversation when one of your parents suddenly showed up? “While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came from the cloud, saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him" (Matthew 17:5). How majestic is that? A bright cloud accompanied by a voice—that's a truly otherworldly and royal experience. The Spirit of the living God, the creator of heaven and earth, was confirmed by another kingly declaration while Christ was on earth, in front of a loyal few, the profound message. “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
For some, reading this book will be a first-time exploration of Christ; for others, it will be an opportunity for spiritual refreshment, deep reflection, and reminiscing on the holy one of God. Can you sense the excitement of the Father? It’s His “only begotten son”.
Before Christ’s earthly descension, before he was ever born, the decree of His sonship extends throughout all eternity and now in time, over many generations, heralded by God through the voices of the prophets, the testimony of Jesus.
God communicated through holy men—prophets of old—who were called only to repeat what they heard from the Spirit of God; why repeat? because these were not their words, God anointed them to convey His words which carried the life of His Son; they were to announce the coming and arrival of the King with God’s very own impressive proclamations derived directly from the mouth of God, clear explanations, and detailed descriptions that were more precise than a modern-day sonogram: “This is my beloved Son.” He is the one who will carry out my commands!
Isn’t it natural for fathers to feel excited about the birth of their sons? they are the ones who will share the family name and help carry on the family lineage from generation to generation. God’s son would be the epitome of a royal generational carrier, exuberating and revealing the name of His Father. The legacy of God will live on forever!
Unlike natural fathers, who must be prepared for the inevitable death, with no ability to reverse or overturn the death sentence, we understand with humanity that as one father passes away, another must continue the family legacy, whether they be capable or not, to make it beautiful. But this is not the case with Christ! Here is a new life; let us reflect on Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God.
“God expects to have a family with only “one son”.
How would He extend His family from generation to generation, ensuring its existence for all eternity? Was Jesus meant to outlive His Father and carry on the family name? What legacy was He supposed to extend? How would He provide for and care for the family even after His death? More explicitly, what family are we talking about? Who constitutes the family of God? Who is connected to the “King,” who only had “one Son”?
What was Jesus to do?
The decree had been issued: He was the Son of the Living God, whose Father would never die. How could this apply to him? This family is unlike any other; it is indeed "The Royal Family." What were the expectations of the Heavenly Father for His Son?
According to the prophet Isaiah, God placed the government of the entire world on His shoulders (Isaiah 9:6-7).
- Royal Family.
- Royal Responsibility.
Have your parents ever assigned you any major responsibilities? How would you feel if you knew the whole world depended on you?
Also, according to Isaiah 11:1-5, he could not act with “military” strength, but with the strength of “God,” he was not alone.
“And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins”.
John 3:16 says, For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever will believe on him shall not perish but have everlasting life.
Wait!
Did God, the Father of only one son, give him up?
Can you imagine heaven? What was going on in the heavens? What were the angels thinking? What could this be? Better yet, how could this be?
Another royal decree from the King, He made a royal decision!
***Not to be taken lightly, What great salvation! ***
Hebrews 2:10
For it became him, for whom [are] all things, and by whom [are] all things, in bringing many sons into glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
So far, we have introduced God and the Son of God in preparation for exploring Christ:
Who is Christ?
Why is Christ?
How is Christ?
What is Christ?
When is Christ?
In the book on Christ, we will explore the wholeness of who he is and why God would take such extreme measures to use his only begotten son to save those who were lost (John 3:16).
The Mind of An Obedient Son
Although He was a Son, He learned obedience through his suffering (Hebrews 5:8). God kept a close watch on His Son. Through the scriptures, God taught him "what to do and what not to do." This is just the beginning of understanding Christ.
Are you ready for further exploration? Because entering the palace is not as simple as some might think; there are protocols to follow, gestures to make, royal postures to adopt, and rules of engagement to observe. In this context, what was the Son learning about His posture? Was His posture merely a physical performance, or was it a true embodiment of the nature and composure expected of royal lineage? How should someone of such stature and significance behave?
Have you ever considered what Jesus felt or thought while listening to the scriptures being read in the synagogues and the temple, knowing they were His Father's words?
Here are some examples to ponder:
Meditate on these; know that this is not just an enjoyable read but also an informative, life-changing royal experience of the Christ. You have come to the palace to walk with a king, and you are a benefactor (child of God).
Hear the heart of the Father:
- My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings
(Proverbs 4:20).
Jesus was in the synagogue and temple, learning scripture.
- My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path
(Proverbs 1:15).
Jesus even warned his disciples not to follow the doctrine of the Sadducees and Pharisees, let alone the path of the ungodly.
- My son, let them not depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion
(Proverbs 3:21).
Jesus resisted the spirit of man and the devil with the Word of God (these were the words of his Father, royal authority).
- Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and...
