Published to celebrate the 900th anniversary of the Worshipful Company of Weavers, this richly illustrated book is a tribute to the creativity, resourcefulness, and passion behind weaving in Britain today. Visiting a wide range of makers, from handloom weavers creating individual works of art to industrial textile mills producing cloth for the world’s leading design brands, the authors take us into a vibrant, colourful, noisy world. They visit art schools and universities; the weavers of tweed, tartan, cashmere and silk, and the makers of high-tech fabrics used in spacecraft , aeroplanes and cars, medical and engineering applications, furnishings, upholstery, fashion and accessories. They also explore a variety of sustainable, vegan and eco-friendly fabrics.

Alex Martin is a historian and novelist, specialising in illustrated books. Recent works include Making Waves: A History of the Royal Yacht Squadron 1815–2015 (Unicorn, 2016) and Nine Lives, The Story of Biggin Hill (Unicorn, 2023). Emma Crichton-Miller is a writer and journalist. She writes about art, craft and design for the Financial Times and Apollo Magazine, among other publications. Her published books include the first monograph on Edmund de Waal (Phaidon 2014), The Pottery of John Ward (Lund Humpries 2022) and Force of Nature: The Art of Kate Malone (Skira Editore 2024). Dr Kimberley Chandler writes regularly about contemporary craft and design, and is an Exhibition Reviews Editor for The Journal of Modern Craft.
