The Story of
Creation
IN THE BEGINNING
In the beginning, there was only God. There was nothing before God, as referred to in John 1:1-5.
John 1:1-5 NIV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
We have no way of knowing how long God was alone before He created our world. This brings up an important question; Why did God make us? This has been a heavily debated question throughout time. The answer is quite simple. As we read the Bible, we quickly see that God was full of love and care. God is referred to as being perfect, but even a perfect being can have a personality, wants, and needs. I believe He made us, so He would not be alone. This is made clear through God’s interactions with man. He yearns for our love and obedience.
Another thing that I want to point out is that God creates laws: Laws of nature, physics, and more. I do believe that even He is bound to a degree by these laws. I argue that because of His justness and perfection that anything He does is perfect, so if He created a law, it would be perfect and set in place for all of time. Think of how the planets move so perfectly; if we were slightly closer to the sun, we would all die. I also think of the water cycle, which cleans and recycles the same water that was on the earth when Jesus was alive. We can see that He is proud of what He made. This gives us more insight into who our God is. He also created us with free will.
After deciding what to make, God gets to work. I love how Genesis 1:1 opens. From what we understand, this is about 4004 BC.
Genesis 1:1 NIV
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
This is the most profound and powerful way to open the Bible. As Biblically minded people we have no issue seeing this as the truth. However, for some, science is the way. The brightest minds of mankind state that there was nothing, then there was everything. This is according to the big bang theory. To me, this is the most powerful verse in all of scripture. If you can get behind this, then every verse to follow is easy.
After God creates the cosmos and our beautiful world, He creates man. I am sure you know the story well. So, I will not repeat that part. However, I do want to make clear God’s intention for His creation. When He created us, God wanted us to have free will. He wanted us to be able to choose our own way. Proverbs 16:9 makes this clear.
Proverbs 16:9 NIV
The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.
Sometime either before God created our galaxy or before He created man, He created angels. Angels have various jobs and roles within God’s Kingdom. According to the Book of Enoch, a number of angels were tasked with watching over man. We will go into detail about that in Chapter 2.
The Bible does not have a lot to say about angels’ daily tasks. We see angels used in battle or to deliver messages to man. Revelations 7:1 shows God using angels to stop the winds of the earth. I believe that God uses angels extensively to fulfill His work.
Revelations 7:1 NIV
After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, so that no wind would blow on the earth or on the sea or on any tree.
GOD’S RULE
God created Adam, then Eve. Then gave them the first and only rule in Genesis 2:16-17.
Genesis 2:16-17 NIV
And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
This is the only rule that God gave to man, quite simple. I always wonder what things would be like if this rule was never broken. I want you to think for a moment. God could have created us like robots, programmed to do and act exactly like He wanted. But He did not. God was very committed to us having free will. He yearned for us to choose Him. But if we are to choose Him, there must be something to choose from. We can see this in the two trees He makes. The Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. I will elaborate more on that later.
THE SERPENT
Genesis 3:1 introduces us to the serpent. In all my study, looking at the Hebrew text and going through the Bible and Enoch, this is indeed a snake. There is some speculation that this was another word for Satan. From what I see, that is untrue.
Genesis 3:1 NIV
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
What are some takeaways that you see here?
Why was the serpent more crafty?
Did God create evil?
How did the serpent talk?
Is the serpent Satan?
These are some very tough questions. I will do my best to answer them here.
Why was the serpent more crafty? In Genesis 1:25, God finishes the creation of all animals and finds that it “was good.” This tells us that the serpent, when created, was good. We can also see in Isiah 65:25 that serpents will be in the remade world. This implies that, like us, animals have personalities, characteristics, and free will to a degree. Even if they are to be ruled by man as laid out in Genesis 1:28. When you think about a snake and the times that you have seen them in the wild, they are rarely in plain view. They are small and low to the ground. Not only that, but they are low on the food chain, not to mention the way they move. It would make sense that they would need to be crafty to survive. God gives each animal survival instincts. I believe this is no different. There is also some speculation and proof that snakes may have had legs at one point, possibly before they were punished in the garden. Even so, the snake would still need to be crafty to survive.
Genesis 1:25 NIV
God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:28 NIV
God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
Isiah 65:25 NIV
The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, and dust will be the serpent’s food. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain,” says the Lord.
Did God create evil? This one is incredibly hard to explain. First and foremost, the Bible repeatedly tells us that God is perfect. An example is Deuteronomy 32:4. If He is perfect, then I cannot imagine how He would create evil.
Deuteronomy 32:4 NIV
He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright, and just is He.
Things to know about God:
The Rock
Works are perfect
Just
Faithful
Does no wrong
Upright
This brings me to the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. We know two things about this tree. It contained knowledge of good and evil and if you ate from it, you would die.
Some religions speculate that good and evil are separate from the human psyche. That we were not made with this knowledge, which I agree with. We know that God had this knowledge according to Genesis 3:22.
Genesis 3:22 NIV
And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat and live forever.”
If God had knowledge of good and evil, then He did not create it because it was with Him. Why would He put this tree in the garden? He wanted us to have free will and freedom of choice. We see throughout the Bible that we can be tested. Leaving the tree in the garden left room for Adam and Eve to choose to listen to God or not. The next thing, I think the tree was part of something else God had planned for us. In Genesis 3:22 we see that after we ate the fruit, God realized we had some of the same knowledge He had. Because of that, we should not be allowed to eat from the Tree of Life. If you eat of the tree of life, you will live forever. Adam and Eve were allowed this tree; while they were in the garden, they could live forever with mortal bodies. There seems to be a condition here where a man cannot be allowed to eat from both trees. This is...
