A map of heavens, in cosmic love.
Shiva's tales and Rudra's birth,
In sacred lore, we find our worth.
Section 2: Anusanga
01 Kalpas & Manvantaras
Kalpas, Manvantaras - their Duration
Upon hearing the first Pada’s tale,
Kapeya, delighted, had doubts to unveil.
With words of praise, he sought to know,
The interim period where Kalpas flow.
“O Sage, recount the Pratisandhi to me,
The transit time between Kalpas, I wish to see.”
Thus requested by Kapeya, the wise Suta began,
To narrate the origin of worlds, as the story ran.
Suta said: "Now I shall describe, O men of holy vows,
The past and future Kalpas, and the transit that allows.
The current Kalpa, Varaha, auspicious and bright,
And the Manvantaras within, a sacred sight.
Understand the transition from the ancient Kalpa’s end,
To the current one, where new beginnings blend.
When the previous Kalpa fades without a trace,
A new Kalpa begins, with Janaloka’s grace.
Two Kalpas have a stage that separates,
All beings annihilated, as the cycle dictates.
The period between Kalpas is Pratisandhi’s name,
In Manvantaras, Yugas connect, unbroken they remain.
Each Kalpa has a former and latter half,
When one ends, the next begins its path.
The current Kalpa, first among them all,
With Purva-Ardha and Para-Ardha, it stands tall.
Before this Kalpa, an ancient one passed,
At the end of a thousand Yugas, it breathed its last.
When the Kalpa ends and universal burning nears,
Devas, stars, and planets, all disappear.
Twenty-eight crores of meritorious souls,
In fourteen Manvantaras, their number rolls.
In every Kalpa, seventy thousand more,
Devas in aerial chariots, remembered in lore.
In fourteen Manvantaras, Devas, Pitrs, and sages,
Imbibing nectar, in firmament and heaven’s stages."
They had their servants, wives, and sons,
Devas beyond caste, life’s stages undone.
As annihilation neared, all beings aligned,
Equal in Sayujya, divinity combined.
Intellect’s recurrence, souls’ pride in place,
Devas of three worlds, in sustenance’s grace.
When sustenance ended, annihilation drew near,
Devas left abodes, to Maharloka they steered.
Practicing Yoga, purity they attained,
Mental Siddhi, their spirits unchained.
Brahmanas, Ksattriyas, Vaishyas, all in line,
To Maharloka, their spirits did climb.
In Maharloka, Devas agitated,
To Janaloka, their minds navigated.
Residents of Kalpa, for Yugas they moved,
In purity and Siddhi, their spirits improved.
Together they reached Jana’s sacred space,
Achieving mental Siddhi, in divine embrace.
After ten Kalpas, to Satya they go,
To Brahma’s world, where no returns flow.
Equal to Brahma, in features and sense,
In Samyamas’ pleasure, they find recompense.
Bliss from Brahman, liberation they gain,
Bound by Prakrti, yet honor they maintain.
Like a sleeper’s knowledge, without clear sight,
Purified service, bliss ignites.
Differences withheld, lustrous they grow,
Effects and instruments, in harmony flow.
In Brahma’s realm, observing multiplicity,
Pure souls, unsullied, in Prakrta’s simplicity.
Stabilized in soul, sense organs equipped,
In righteous duties, their authority stripped.
Prakrti observed, distinct from Purusa’s might,
Multifarious functions, in cosmic light.
When creation begins anew,
Prakrti connects with souls, reality in view.
Those attaining salvation, do not return,
Non-existence like flames, once they burn.
Noble souls ascend, beyond three worlds they fly,
Maharloka unoccupied, in the sky.
As Kalpa’s end nears, Gandharvas and more,
Pishacas, Brahmanas, humans, disciples they bore.
Animals, birds, immobile beings too,
Stand on earth, as rays combine, suns anew.
Seven rays become suns, burning bright,
Rising gradually, worlds in their light.
Burning three worlds, rivers, mountains dry,
Suns inflame, beings helpless, under the sky.
Virtue and evil, bodies burned away,
In Yugas’ interval, sins do not stay.
Freed from sunshine, auspicious rain pours,
People join others, in similar forms.
During Brahma’s night, born of the unmanifest,
They become mental sons, in creation’s quest.
Worlds burned by seven suns, earth flooded with rain,
Seas desolate, waters scattered, like arrows they gain.
Salila they are called, following in line,
Flood of water, Arnava, in abundance shine.
Ambhas, it shone and spread, reaching everywhere,
Tanus, it extended, earth within its care.
Shar, to shatter or scatter, meanings it bears,
Water’s essence, in cosmic affairs.
In the vast sheet of water, Naras move slow,
At Brahma’s day’s end, night begins to flow.
Earth submerged, fires extinguished, winds calm,
Darkness surrounds, Brahma’s presiding charm.
Brahma, with thousand eyes, feet, and heads,
Golden complexion, sense-organs he treads.
Waters are Naras, his bodies they form,
Narayan he is, in waters he warms.
The first Prajapati, of noble mind,
A thousand acts, with Vedas aligned.
Lustrous as the sun, universe’s guard,
First Viraj, Hiranyagarbha, beyond mind’s yard.
In Kalpa’s start, Rajas he holds,
Creation begins, as Brahma unfolds.
In Kalpa’s end, Tamas prevails,
Kala devours, as creation pales.
Narayan in cosmic ocean, Sattva’s might,
Divides threefold, in worlds’ sight.
66-67. With three forms, he creates, devours, protects,
In vast waters, his power reflects.
At Yugas’ end, earth covered in water’s embrace,
Brahma as Narayan, shines in space.
Four types of beings, Tamas they wear,
In Maharloka, sages see Kala’s lair.
Bhrgu and others, great sages they are,
At Kalpa’s close, they see Kala afar.
Rsis move with Sattva, great they stand,
Maharsis they are, in cosmic land.
Seven great sages, in Maharloka they stay,
Seeing sleeping Kala, in previous Kalpa’s sway.
Brahma functions through nights unending,
Great sages see Kala, his presence blending.
Fourteen worlds Brahma evolves,
Kalpa defined, as creation revolves.
He creates all beings, again and again,
In Kalpas’ beginnings, his power sustains.
Vyakta and Avyakta, manifest and unseen,
The universe evolves, by his will serene.
The inter-relation of Kalpas, now told,
Present becomes past, as cycles unfold.
Briefly recounted, the previous Kalpa’s tale,
Now the current Kalpa, let understanding prevail.
02 World Knowledge
Divisions of Earth
He passed a thousand Yugas’ night,
Brahma creates, with dawn’s first light.
In waters vast, Brahma as wind,
Darkness envelops, beings rescind.
Earth flooded round, elements in Satya’s embrace,
Brahma moves like glowworm, in night’s rainy grace.
Quickly he moves, intellect’s guide,
Seeking stabilization, with wisdom as his stride.
Searching for earth, within waters deep,
Brahma as boar, ancient memories keep.
He lifts the earth, with waters it lay,
Places it again, in cosmic array.
Oceans’ waters in oceans, rivers in rivers flow,
Mountains gathered, earth leveled below.
Samvartaka fire, mountains melted and spread,
Solidified by wind, where molten rocks led.
Acalas, immovable, Parvatas with joints,
Mountains arise, at creation’s points.
Giris swallowed, Siloccaya moved,
Seven times seven subcontinents, creation approved.
Forty-nine subcontinents, mountains at borders stand,
Continents formed, by Brahma’s hand.
In heaven’s splendor, naturally they shine,
Seven continents and oceans, in circles they align.
Bhu and other worlds, Brahma creates anew,
Moon, sun, planets, immobile beings too.
Devas of this Kalpa, Sthanins they stand,
Waters, fire, earth, wind, firmament, heaven’s land.
Dyaus, quarters, oceans, rivers, mountains tall,
Herbs, trees, creepers, time units, he creates them all.
Twilight, nights, days, months, and years,
Ayanas, Yugas, abodes, and dwellers’ spheres.
Souls for abodes, Yugas’ periods he made,
Krita, Treta, Dvapara, Kali, in cosmic parade.
At Kalpa’s start, subjects he did create,
Previous Kalpa’s beings, their tales relate.
In dissolving Kalpa, subjects burned by fire,
Those not in Tapo-loka, return to inspire.
Visible again, for creation’s sake,
In subsequent Kalpa, new forms they take.
Created beings, for progeny they strive,
Achieving Purusarthas, in life they thrive.
Devas, Pitrs, humans, in order they came,
Equipped with penance, abodes they claim.
Humans become Brahmanas, spiritual souls,
Karman’s faults, to heaven their journey rolls.
Returning embodied, in every Yuga they’re born,
Karman’s remnants, their forms adorn.
Bound by Kalpa’s advent, from Janaloka they rise,
Auspicious, inauspicious Karmans, diverse forms they comprise.
Devas to immobile beings, mutual influence they share,
