Workshops empower social work students to overcome writer's block and develop refined editing skills. Step by step, they learn to adopt a clear, active voice, master punctuation, and engage with concise expression, culminating in a capstone exercise that simulates a grant proposal process.
Developed as a companion to The Writer's Handbook for Social Work, the third edition of 12 Workshops for Writing in Social Work offers students a series of one-hour workshops, which can be completed individually or through group instruction. Each workshop builds upon the last to deepen learners' skillsets using a systematic and comprehensive approach. Together, both books provide a foundation for a social work writing class. In the first workshop, students learn how to write freely to combat their writer's block. They are then ready to develop solid editing skills such as adapting their voice for academic and professional audiences, using the active voice, being concise, and punctuating accurately. Building skill in punctuation supports learners in filling their learning gaps in grammar and becoming confident with their writing abilities. Students are provided with opportunities to flex their skillsets and test their learning throughout the guide. The book culminates in a capstone activity in which students prepare a grant proposal and presentation. Engaging and highly practical, 12 Workshops for Writing in Social Work is an essential guide for aspiring and in-practice social workers. Along with The Writer's Handbook for Social Work, this companion workbook is perfect for a class dedicated to improving writing skills in social work.
