Markus Brann (1849-1920), who directed the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau from 1891 until his death, was one of the central figures of the Wissenschaft des Judentums (scholarship of Judaism) in the German-speaking world. As a representative of a conservative Judaism and a positive-historical view of history, he made his mark above all as editor of the Monatsschrift für Geschichte und Wissenschaft des Judentums and as initiator and member of numerous Jewish scholarly associations and circles. His scholarly correspondence, published here, offers an overview of discourses, networks, and projects in the scholarship of Judaism. The letters also reflect inner-Jewish positioning as well as the confrontation with the non-Jewish environment.

Dan Diner ist Professor emeritus für Moderne Geschichte an der Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Von 1999 bis 2014 war er Direktor des Simon-Dubnow-Instituts für jüdische Geschichte und Kultur und Professor am Historischen Seminar der Universität Leipzig.
Prof. Dr. Christian Wiese ist Inhaber der Martin-Buber-Professur an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main sowie seit 2021 Direktor des Buber-Rosenzweig-Instituts für jüdische Geistes- und Kulturgeschichte der Moderne und Gegenwart und seit 2022 Co-Direktor des Frankfurt–Tel Aviv Center for the Study of Religious and Interreligious Dynamics.
Dr. Daniel Ristau studierte Neuere und Neueste Geschichte und Politikwissenschaft. Er ist als freiberuflicher Historiker und Lektor tätig.
