Explores how the events of 1848 changed Europe forever.
With the fall of communism a decade ago, millions in central and eastern Europe were caught up in what they knew at the time were momentous events. The British cast back to 1917 or the French Revolution of 1789 for the last time Europe had witnessed events which were so clearly writing themselves into the history books. But for many Europeans, the date was 1848. The events then are as momentous as any in European history. Compressed into a single year, and across the continent, a series of revolutions threatened every established power, and laid the future open to every group pressing to be heard. 1848 is the year in which the old order in Europe was pushed to the brink. It was a historical turning point: Eric Hobsbaum sees it as the watershed between the age of revolution and the age of capital. A.J.P. Taylor took it to be the beginning of the struggle for mastery in Europe. 1848 also saw the first real acknowledgment of pressure for social reforms, and set the pattern for the modern nation state. 1848 is one the great years in European history.
