The Author: Howard Isham, Professor Emeritus at San Francisco State University, taught in the interdisciplinary Department of Humanties for twenty-five years. He was a music major at Pomona College until his senior year was interrupted by World War II, during which he served at sea in the U.S. Naval Reserve. His graduate degrees include an M.A. in Musicology from Columbia University, an M.F.A. in Music History from Princeton University, and a Ph.D. in European History from Columbia University.
«Every Romantic or nineteenth-century collection should include this unusual study. Dr. Isham’s unprecedented constellation of skills makes ‘Image of the Sea’ not only the first, but probably the final word on its important subject. Scholars in art, music, literature, philosophy and nineteenth century culture will be grateful to Dr. Isham for conquering this enormous subject.» (George J. Leonard, author ‘Into the Light of Things: The Art of the Commonplace from Wordsworth to John Cage’)
