In Rubble Music, Abby Anderton explores the classical music culture of postwar Berlin, analyzing archival documents, period sources, and musical scores to identify the sound of civilian suffering after urban catastrophe.

1. Rubble Music examines the links between trauma, urban decay and ruins, and music. While extensive attention has been paid to the idea of rubble and ruin in post-WWII visual and literary arts, there has been limited work done on the influence of rubble and ruin in sound and music. This book identifies the hallmarks of this new genre, which the author defines as "the sound of civilian suffering after urban catastrophe."

2. This book explores the suffering of everyday German citizens in Berlin during the period of occupation and reconstruction. This has been a previously taboo subject so this book breaks new ground through its very focus.
