I have been arrested by a revelation that is not new, just obscure, and hidden. Its obscurity is mainly because noted scholars have done no work on it. It is hidden because it seems to be a subject that the scholars avoid, like a plague. The revelation is that the Holy Bible is essentially a Black History Book and the bible characters, which Christians and Jews have studied across the years, are Black folk. It troubles me that there is not much in print concerning this truth. I have a personal library of some 8,000 books and 95% of them were written by white scholars. My anguish is in the fact that white scholars have covered every biblical subject under the sun, but none, to my knowledge, have done a scholarly work on Blacks in the bible. Why is that subject taboo? With all the corroborating evidence within the Holy Bible, why is there no scholarly work from the white community on Blacks in the bible. I issue a challenge to my white Christian brothers to do a fair 10 and scholarly work on Blacks in the bible. Produce that work for all ethnic communities and you may be surprised as to how potent it will be in the solving of the race problem confronting our times. In the mean time, I prepare this work as a proclamation of a revelation that refuses to let me go. I write not as the scholar on the subject of Blacks in the bible, just a preaching pastor given a revelation from God, with a mandate to publish it. I hope that this work will provoke thought, issue challenge and serve as a 'primer of the scholarly pump' that moves Black and White scholars in particular and the Christian community in general to view the Holy Bible as a Black history book. I also write to help lift the self-esteem of my people who have been and are treated as if they are second-class citizens even in this twentieth century. It is lifting to know that the bible is all about Black folk.
CHAPTER II
LESSONS FROM A BLACK SUPERHERO
Genesis 10: 6-12
6And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Miz’ra-iam, and Phut, and Canaan. 7And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Vav’ilah, and Sabtah, and Ra’amah, and Sab’techa: and the sons of Ra’amah; Sheba and Dedan. 8And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth. 9He was a mighty hunter before the Lord: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord. 10And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. 11Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nin’eveh, and the city Reho’both, and Calah, 12and Resen between Nin’eveh and Calah: the same is a great city.
Our labor is to introduce you to some of our Black brothers of Biblical History. I labor to establish in our minds and in the minds of any whom will hear these messages, that the bible is defiantly a Black history book. It reveals a God-filled history of God in relationship to man, but most certainly the Black man. In the last chapter, I introduced you to Noah, the Black man who walked with God. But there are others.
Now, I do not want anybody to think for one minute that the Holy Bible is written only for the Black man. No, it is written for all men. But since there seems to have been, on one hand, a deliberate effort to hide the Black man’s presence in the scriptures and on the other hand, a misconstrued view of the bible as being the ‘white man’s bible’, I am committed to showing not only the Black man’s presence but also providential intentionally to include the Black man in the redemption story and objective.
So, I point us again to the sons of Noah and especially Ham and his descendants. Now, remember that Noah is a Black man. I argued previously that most scholars would credit Ham as being Black and the father of the Black race. In fact the name Ham means “dark–skinned.” The name Ham comes from the Egyptian word “Cam”, which is the strongest term for black. It means black lamb or black people. The Hebrew word for Ham is Cham; it also means black or Egypt.
Well, if Ham is Noah’s Black child, then according to the scientific community, Noah had to be Black. Scientific studies declare emphatically that conception occurs by a male seed, which fertilizes the female egg. This means that the Father’s blood, not the mother’s, flows through the child’s veins. In fact, blood test today will prove whom the father of a child is with from 95% to 99% accuracy. Noah’s blood runs through Ham’s veins and if Ham is Black, then so is Noah. This means that Japheth and Shem are Black children as well.
G. Campbell Morgan, in his book, An Exposition of the Whole Bible, says “Christian Ethnologist, still claim that all the races of today may be traced back to Noah’s three sons.”4 These three sons were born of the same father and mother and all of them and their immediate family spoke the same language.
It will be a major task to explain the differences of race without consideration of the millennia of crossbreeding on one hand, curses of God on the other, and the millennia of environmental changes. But after the dispersion of the people at Babel, the three sons of Noah scattered Northward (Japheth), Southward (Ham), and Eastward (Shem) and consequently new tribes and new languages were born.5 (George Lamsa, Old Testament Light, pp 35-36)
Looking again at Ham in our scripture text, verse 6 tells us that Ham had four sons: Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan. We know much of Canaan but consider with me Cush. Verses 7 and 8 list the sons of Cush, but Verse 8 elaborates on one son more than others do. Nimrod is his name.
First, CONSIDER NIMROD’S BLACKNESS. He is a son of Cush. The Cushites settled in Africa (10:7). Cush means black faced. The Unger Bible Dictionary informs us that the Cushites migrated to Africa. Cush and Ethiopia refer to the same place. Both terms mean black face or burnt-faced people. It seems that the King James writer substituted Ethiopia instead of Cush for racist reasons. But Cushites were the folks who settled in the areas of Africa outside of Egypt. The Sudanese, or Nubians called them Christians; the Arabs called them Moors; the Europeans called them Negroes; the ancient Egyptians called them Cushites, but they were all the same folks! Now Nimrod is one Black biblical character whom white folk portray badly, but the fact is that he was a powerful Black brother of Noah’s bloodline and era. The bible calls him a mighty one. The Hebrew word for mighty one is ‘gibbor’. It means giant chieftain, superhero, and champion. Nimrod was indeed a superhero. He was, according to verse 8, somebody! The verse says, “He began to be a mighty one in the earth.”
You can be proud of this man of ebony hue who is somebody at the second genesis of the human race. The bible sends refreshment to a people who seem to be the last considered in the terms of history in Nimrod. He is a Black man, a great Black man, couched in biblical history for all times.
Second, note that NIMROD WAS MIGHTY BEFORE THE LORD. Verse 9 says, “He was a mighty hunter before the Lord: wherefore it is said, even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord.” This brother was “BAD!” It was said that he was so tough; he fought wild animals with his bare hands.
Now some White theologians play this up in a negative way. Warren Wiersbe in his book With the Word says “The phrase ‘mighty hunter’ implies that he was a rebel against God and a tyrant against his fellow man” 6 (page 22). Wiersbe is not alone is his posture. It is sad but true that there will always be some that will cast aspersion and negatives at Nimrod and other men of color.
But some will give Nimrod his due. Consider what G. Campbell Morgan says concerning the descendants of Noah and Nimrod as Noah’s grandson. “What is clear and to be carefully observed is that their movements were under a direct divine guidance, even though they may not have been conscious of it”7 (G. Campbell Morgan page 15).
God made Nimrod great. He still makes Black men great. It is nothing but the hand of God on the life of a Michael Jordan or Michael Jackson, a Jesse Jackson or Henry Lyons. It was the hand of God on the life of M.L. King that made for greatness. Some of these men may not know it, but God is in their business. Many of you may not be aware of God’s presence and power in your life, but He is there. God is making many great, even though they do not know nor acknowledge it. Now, there is a warning to be heeded and I will come back to it.
Third, consider NIMROD’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS. Verse 10 tells us he was the world’s first king. The text says “and the beginning of his kingdom was Babel.” If he had a kingdom, he was a king. Nimrod was earth’s first king! He was the first founder of an empire. He founded Babylon. He founded Nineveh. Nimrod is in the spirit of his forefather. He is a descendant of Cush. Cushites had arts superior to other people of their day, were merchants and builders, produced major architecture, had a peculiar mixture of language, and a belief in one God.
The Cushites also developed the formula for calculating the rectangle and by 2,000 BC they had developed uniform multiplication tables and square roots. By the year 2,000 BC they had invented writing and signature seals to sign their letters. They also developed the first grammar system including pronouns. The Cushite City of Aick was called Cush Town and was famous for its library. It contained the sacred writings that were buried there before the flood. Cushites had libraries of over 30,000 volumes of books. They compiled the first grammar and bilingual dictionaries with 50,000 tables. The Cushite libraries had 20,000 volumes that were mounted on cylinders and revolving stands. They developed dictionaries, encyclopedias, and works of law, science, and literature. And white people told Black people that all Africans know how to do is run around in grass skirts.
There is evidence that Cushites in Nubia made the pyramids first and brought the technology to Egypt. Markings on the walls show that Cushites were superior in art, had a luxurious civilization and were people of great knowledge. Nimrod was a Cushite, and mirrored his forefathers in creativity and ingenuity.
Yes, Nimrod was truly a superhero but Nimrod really got beside himself. He thought that he could be God. That seems to be the downfall of many of our heroes today. The Lord has blessed them but they have forgotten from where their blessings come. The absence of the Black man in church says we have forgotten from whence cometh our help. The average size church membership is about 390 across this nation, but Black men constitute only 18%. In Sunday Schools, with an average attendance of 83, Black men comprise only 12% and Black youth comprise 58%. The Black man must not forget from whence his blessings come.
Remember:
God brought you from where you were to where you are.
God opened doors closed in your face.
God made the way...
