Israel and Amalek.
A Translation and Commentary of the Targum Sheni as a Contribution to the Interpretation of Esther.
Text and Studies on Ancient Judaism
(Text in German)
This study translates, annotates and comments upon the Targum Sheni, the most comprehensive Targum on the book of Esther. Contrary to traditional research, which places the aspect of the reception in the foreground, this study shows that the Targum Sheni represents a consciously developed composition.
The Aggadic traditions included in the Targum are tied in with a larger context and reflect individual aspects of the narrative. The motif of the supremacy of the kingdom of God, which is manifested in the justness of history, is a central theme of exegesis which is significant for the religious history of Judaism at the end of Byzantine domination.
