The text is divided into two sections. Part I begins with a chapter that describes nine characteristics of an effective counselor and then moves on to chapters that examine foundational, essential, and commonly used skills. Edward Neukrug earned his doctorate in counselor education at the University of Cincinnati and is a professor of counseling at Old Dominion University. A licensed professional counselor and licensed psychologist, he has experience in outpatient therapy, crisis counseling, substance abuse counseling, private practice, and as a school counselor. Dr. Neukrug has written and given hundreds of articles and presentations, and is the author of eight books, including Counseling Theory and Practice; A Brief Orientation to Counseling; The World of the Counselor; Theory, Practice, and Trends in Human Services: An Introduction; the Dictionary of Counseling and Human Services; Essentials of Testing and Assessment; Skills and Techniques for Human Services Professionals; and Skills and Tools for Today’s Counselors and Psychotherapists. He also the editor of the two-volume Sage Encyclopedia of Theory in Counseling and Psychotherapy.
