Located approximately five kilometers southwest of Kelheim at the entrance to the Danube Gorge is the Benedictine abbey at Weltenburg. The medieval historian Dr. Stephanie Haarländer sheds light on the early, fabled history of the monastery and traces its development up to the present day. The art historian Dr. Lothar Altmann reports extensively about the architectural and decorative history of the abbey and the church, provides a description of its location and layout, and elaborates on the architecture and furnishings of the Asam Church. An excursion is dedicated to the shrine of Our Lady at Frauenberg. A description of Benedictine life in Weltenburg today is made by Abbot Thomas M. Freihart OSB. Short biographies of the artists and craftsmen working in Weltenburg as well as extensive references to literature round off the richly illustrated volume. The photographs were newly taken by the renowned Munich photographer Achim Bunz.
