Trends of Engineering Systems Evolution offers a detailed and practical explanation of common patterns that occur in the evolution of engineering systems. Researchers have been building on the work of Genrich Altshuller and his colleagues since the middle of the twentieth century, when the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) became a field of study. The authors of this book use their research and practical experience in the field of TRIZ to offer advanced insights into how the Trends of Engineering Systems Evolution (TESE) can be used to guide innovation and discovery. The first two chapters describe the power of technology pull and provide a foundation for understanding the structure of TRIZ. Chapter 3 offers practical advice by elucidating correlations between the performance of an engineering system’s main parameters of value and stages of the S-curve. The authors describe each stage of the S-curve, identifying its causes and indicators and offering recommendations about how to shape system design when a particular stage has been reached. This pragmatic S-curve analysis can be used to create innovation roadmaps. Chapter 4 describes the hierarchical structure of the TESE and thoroughly explains individual trends and sub-trends. Illustrations and examples accompany each explanation and help to clarify how trends can be used to shape innovation. Examples range over a wide variety of systems, demonstrating the broad applicability of the TESE. The authors ultimately show that the TESE can be used in research and consulting to determine the innovative potential of an engineering system. The book will appeal to readers interested in all aspects of product innovation, including investment, research, and development.

Alex Lyubomirskiy obtained his TRIZ Master diploma from Genrich Altshuller. He is the chief scientific officer and co-founder of GEN TRIZ, LLC. Mr. Lyubomirskiy has 30 years of experience with in-depth research and development of the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ). He was a contributor to the development of such post-TRIZ tools as Function Analysis, Trimming, Feature Transfer, S-Curve Analysis, and Evolutionary Trends. He is the recipient of more than 20 patents and author of multiple publications.

Dr. Simon Litvin is one of the world's foremost experts in TRIZ, Open Innovation, and Value Engineering. He has more than 40 years of experience developing, teaching, and implementing innovative methods and is one of the architects of modern TRIZ methodology - GEN TRIZ. Dr. Litvin was a student and close colleague of TRIZ founder Genrich Altshuller. Dr. Litvin is the CEO/President of GEN TRIZ, LLC (Boston, USA). He is also the Vice President of R&D for the International TRIZ Association (MATRIZ) and Chairman of the TRIZ Master Certification Board.

Dr. Sergei Ikovenko is one of leading consultants and project facilitators in TRIZ. He is the author of more than 120 publications, including 2 books, and he has received 112 patents. TRIZ Master Ikovenko has studied and taught TRIZ since 1986 and holds a diploma of Excellent TRIZ instructor from G. Altshuller, the founder of TRIZ. He is a Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and is an adjunct professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tufts University. He is also an Honorary Professor of the University of Edinburgh, UK.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian M. Thurnes has facilitated and coached TRIZ projects in large companies for more than 15 years. He is the author and translator of TRIZ- and LEAN-books and articles and is actively involved in the generation of the German TRIZ-standard VDI 4521. At the University of Applied Sciences of Kaiserslautern, he teaches TRIZ in several bachelor’s and master’s programs. He also directs the MBA program “Innovations-Management” and is founder and director of the Competence Center for Operational Excellence and Innovations Methodologies OPINNOMETH.

Dr. Robert Adunka became the first TRIZ Master to work in German-speaking countries in September 2014. He is the founder and managing director of the TRIZ Consulting Group GmbH. The TRIZ Consulting Group GmbH is a company with the mission to promote and develop the use of the TRIZ methodology, particularly in German-speaking countries. To this end, the company relies on top-quality documentation and instructors as well as an international network.
