In Brunei, guidance teachers and counsellors are appointed by the Department of Schools, Ministry of Education in collaboration with Universiti Brunei Darussalam through a comprehensive selection and evaluation processes. Counsellors are defined as professionals who should at least underwent a one-year Certificate or Diploma in counseling training awarded by a local or oversea institution. On the other hand, guidance teachers are assistant to counsellors' whom do not possess the relevant counselling qualifications. They comprises of teachers who attended workshops, seminars or short courses lasting two to three months only.Generally, a counsellor is more qualified than a guidance teacher. Many initiatives have been made by the government to improve the counselling services and counselors' professionalism such as upgrading guidance teachers and counselors for further studies as well as workshops and seminars in this field.In Brunei Darussalam"from 2006 continuous effort of upgrading teachers had been carried out via training in Certificate or Diploma in Counselling in order to extend the services to 85 primary schools to help students cope with learning, social and and discipline.

Azizi Yahaya is Associate Professor of Psychology and Education, Universiti Malaysia Sabah. He has presented more than 130 conferences papers with 55 papers were published in journals. In addition, he has also published 25 academic books and 92 chapter in books. He is also expert in data analysis by using SPSS and AMOS.
