The Iberian Peninsula links two oceans and thus, several continents of the world. This fact, too long overlooked by Romance language scholars, raises philological, aesthetic, and cultural questions that go beyond the confines of the 21st century. The study suggests a new reading of the history Romance language scholarship and of 17th century canonical texts. Die Iberische Halbinsel verbindet zwei Weltmeere und daher auch mehrere Kontinente der Welt. Diese Tatsache, die in der romanistischen Literaturwissenschaft zu lange übersehen worden ist, wirft jenseits der Schwelle des 21. Jahrhunderts philologische, ästhetische und kulturwissenschaftliche Fragen auf. Sowohl die romanistische Fachgeschichte als auch kanonische Texte aus dem frühen 17. Jahrhundert erfahren hier eine neue Lektüre.
