Naref was a landmark of the Herakleopolitan territory, often mentioned in religious sources, which rated amongst the most prestigious Osirian centres of ancient Egypt. A local form of Osiris (Osiris Naref) developed in connection with the traditions of this Upper Egyptian area from the New Kingdom onwards. This study seeks to explain the meanings, functions, and local attachments of the toponym and the different features of Osiris Naref.
