Cognitive neuropsychology is concerned with the effects of brain injury on aspects of mental life such as perception, memory and language. A cornerstone of the approach is the belief that not only can current cognitive theories shed light on the nature of breakdown, but the patterns of intact and impaired ability seen after brain injury can challenge and change theories of normal mental functioning. Interest in cognitive neuropsychology has grown apace since the late 1960s. There has also been a growing realization that an earlier generation of neuropsychologists working around the turn of the century shared very similar interests and had insights which remain relevant today. This volume contains translations of papers by Grashey (1885), Wernicke (1886) and Pick (1925), along with an introduction by De Bleser and Luzzatti. Grashey's paper is concerned with word-finding in speech and the nature of the connections between speech and writing processes. Wernicke offers an extended commentary on Grashey's work, while Pick, with the benefit of 40 intervening years of investigation, presents his own views on the nature of the disorders that can affect written language use.
All three authors are concerned to discover what disorders can tell us about normal language processes. The volume as a whole serves to remind present day cognitive neuropsychologists of their intellectual links with scientists of a former age whose works should not be venerated but deserve to be known and assimilated to current thinking.

Models of reading and writing and their disorders in classical German aphasiology, R. De Bleser and C. Luzzatti; on aphasia and its relations to perception (translated by R. De Bleser), H. Grashey; neurology - recent contributions on aphasia (translated by R. De Bleser), C. Wernicke; on the pathology of orthography (translated by R. De Bleser), A. Pick.
