In the wake of these events, the Cold War invaded every home and convinced millions of Americans that the liberal establishment created by Franklin Roosevelt and sustained by Harry Truman had betrayed the public trust and placed the nation in mortal peril.

Lisle A. Rose served with the U.S. Department of State from 1972 to 1989 and has taught at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies, USA. He is the author of seven books including After Yalta: America and the Origins of the Cold War and Roots of Tragedy: The United States and the Struggle for Asia.
