German / Deutsch: Die Igala sind eine ethnische Gruppe in Nigeria. Diese materialreiche Arbeit beinhaltet in den er-sten drei Kapiteln eine Einführung in die Thematik sowie eine ausführliche Darstellung des Metho-denansatzes und der in dieser Feldstudie verwendeten wissenschaftlichen Methodik sowie ein Ü-berblick über die vorhandene Literatur und den Forschungsstand zum Thema. Der zweite, eher dis-kursive Teil (Kapitel 4 - 7) behandelt religionsvergleichend Gottesvorstellungen und religiöse Kult-praktiken in der traditionellen Igala-Religion und im Christentum. Kapitel 8 fasst die Geschichte der christlichen Mission unter den Igala zusammen mit Exkursen zu Bibelübersetzung und einigen lin-guistischen Angaben zur Igala-Sprache und zur Inkulturation des Christentums im afrikanischen Umfeld der Igala. Kapitel 9 bietet einen Vergleich dee Igala- und christlichen kulturtell-religiösen Systeme, während Kapitel 10 eine ausführliche vergleichende Studie traditionell religiöser Igala-Mahle mit dem christlichen Abendmahl/Eucharistie bietet. Kapitel 11 fasst die Ergebnisse dieser Studie zusammen. Diese Arbeit mit wertvollem, sonst eigentlich kaum zugänglichen ethnographi-schen Material ist eine sehr umfassende Studie zur traditionellen Religion der Igala und den Aus-wirkungen, die die Christianisierung dieses Volkes auf die Inkulturation des Christentums unter den Igala in einem afrikanischen Umfeld hatte.
English / Englisch: The Igala are an ethnic group in Nigeria. This work is rich and comprehensive in its contents and offers an introduction to the topic, a presentation of methodologies applied in this field study and a survey of previous research on the topic in the first three chapters. The second part (Chapters 4 - 7) deals with the image of God and gods and the the religious cult practices in Igala traditional religion and Christianity. Chapter 8 presents a summary of the History of Christian Missions among the Igala people of Nigeria with notes on Bible translation and the Igala language and the impacts that the christianization of the Igala people has had in their African setting. Traditional religious systems among the Igala with its Christian counterparts, traditional religious meals and the Lord’s supper/the Eucharist are compared in Chapter 9 and 10. Chapter 11 summarizes the results of this study and a critical discussion of the same. This work includes valuable ethnographical data that are otherwise not easily accessible, and as such it is a comprehensive study on traditional Igala religion and the impacts that the christianization of the Igala people had in an African setting.
