Revised bilingual English and Arabic edition of the book "Himyar - Late Antique Yemen", published 2007.
For over 250 years, Himyar and its allies once ruled Arabia from its southern tip up to the Euphrates. Himyar and its capital, Zafar, have proven themselves thankful topics for the centuries just prior to the advent of Islam. In fact, the genes of the New Age derive from what is normally considered decadent Himyar. Notions of the decadence for Late Antiquity in general are overly simplified and rest on the developmental scheme of “bud, blossom and withering”.
A rich new body of drawings, colour photos and maps shows Himyar in a more positive light than hitherto, and results from Paul Yule’s research in Arabia since the early 1980s. Many of the images are published here for the first time. This is the first monographic treatment of the Himyarite empire, its history, religion and art. It is designed to appeal to non-academic as well as academic readers.
