The collection of the elder Seneca is a rich source for the understanding of the highly interactive literary scene from the Augustan Age through the early decades of the empire. This book gives voice to the speeches of two declaimers: Arellius Fuscus, rhetor to Ovid, and Papirius Fabianus, teacher of the younger Seneca. Using the ‘shared locus’ as a key organizing principle, the author offers new interpretations of the practice of declamation.
